Bipolar Disorder and Sleep: What is a Normal Sleep Pattern?

What is a normal sleep pattern? Is there really such a thing? I have a love hate relationship with an essential life function, sleep. I have for as long as I can remember, but didn't know why until I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. After tracking my sleep patterns, or lack there of, and researching Bipolar Disorder, I discovered that I was not alone and that it was one of the symptoms of Bipolar Disorder.

My Sleep History

What is normal again?

Photobucket
For as long as I remember, I have had periods of insomnia, sometimes lasting for extended periods of time. Sometimes it would last for only a few days or a week.
When I reached puberty at age 11 my sleep pattern, which was already abnormal, went haywire. I often spent nights lying awake in my bed, doing sit ups and other exercises trying to wear myself out, watching television or even talking on the phone to friends. I would stay awake until about 3 or 4am and then get dressed for school and lay down to take a 1 or 2 hour nap. This continued off and on until I began having severe migraines at age 16 and I would sleep for days at the time.
During my first pregnancy, my sleep patterns were relatively normal for a pregnant woman.
After giving birth to my first child, I became depressed and was still suffering from debilitating migraines, so my time sleeping increased dramatically and I would spend most of my time asleep. This continued, but with spurts of insomnia sprinkled in every so often. This continued through my second pregnancy. And up until I was Diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder.

The Importance of Sleep.

What happens if you don't get enough rest?

Sleep is just as important in sustaining life as eating and drinking . Technically we would fall asleep before dying, but over time insomnia can shorten our life by contributing to high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, hypertension, memory loss, and diabetes.
Insomnia can also contribute to poor moods and mood fluctuation in people without Bipolar Disorder, but for those of us with Bipolar Disorder or other mood disorders, it can send us over the edge.

Regulating Sleep Patterns

The most challenging aspect of Bipolar Disorder

PhotobucketI feel regulating sleep patterns is the single most challenging aspect of Managing Bipolar Disorder. If I am manic, it is hard to sleep. If I am depressed, it is hard to get out of bed and stay out of bed.

when I am hypomanic, I am most normal. If I get 7 hours of sleep during this time, I can sustain a level mood and normal sleep pattern easier and for longer than any other time and in turn I am more productive and pleasant
The same as mania can cause insomnia and depression can cause a person to sleep many hours, missing sleep can send a person with Bipolar Disorder into mania or depression.

Taking medication makes it easier to control moods and sleep patterns, but it is still work. It is a lot of work. A person with Bipolar Disorder has to monitor sleep along with other aspects of life so that medication and diet can be altered as needed.

No, I sleep like a baby.

Yes, and it's no fun

@Jay

Please seek help from a family member or go to the closest hospital. Suicide is not the answer, things do get better, much better, even if it doesn't seem like it ever could. I've been there and life is much better now.

Jay says:

Yes I am thinking about suicide. Tired of this mental illnesses

Othercat says:

I've always had trouble sleeping. Heck, as I write this I've been up for 45 hours. But that's because I'm manic right now. I tried to go to sleep yesterday and ended up getting up and cleaning.
I wish I could be one of those people who fall asleep the minute their head hits the pillow. The only time that happens for me is if I take a bunch of sleeping pills (and I'd rather not sleep than do that).

grannysage says:

Yes, for a long time after I left my first husband and even now when I get stressed. I finally solved the problem; I take an antianxiety at bedtime and put on my "magic" socks. I also have restless legs syndrome and found that wearing support hose to bed helps a lot. If I forget, I end up getting up and looking for my magic socks. What a granny kind of thing to do, lol.

aut0tek says:

2-3x a week for this bipolar. :-( tried plenty of meds that they all CLAIMED would help me sleep AND help bipolar d/o... Seroquel, lexapro, Klonopin, Paxil, Effexor, Lithium, Geodon, Abilify, as well as Ambien and other "sleep" meds like it. Nothing's helped so far. Seems a lot worse in the winter than in the summer, though?

pussreboots says:

Yes. About one week out of a month. It sucks!

bipolartink says:

Currently have it - and it doesn't just drive me mad my my husband too (as I sit reading and commenting on blogs on the laptop right by his ear :>)

kiwisoutback says:

I've had it at times, not currently though. I found that often it was related to what I was eating/drinking and when.

Your lenses about BiPolar have helped me more than you can know. As the daughter of someone who is obviously Bi-Polar and who was never properly treated and Mother to a daughter who is Bo-Polar, mentla illness features heavily in my day to day life.

    Thank you Crystal :)

I've found that if I go to bed at the first sign of being tired, I can fall asleep within an hour. But for some reason, if I'm not asleep by 10 o'clock I get an energy boost (even if I was dead on my feet 30 minutes before) and can't get to sleep until early morning.

I also sleep a lot on weekends and love to nap. I've decided this is normal for me. I love to stay up late and then sleep most of the day. But by Monday I have to change my life around again.

I'm always impressed by your openness about your disorder and how you manage it. I think that sharing your experiences will help a lot of people. Great job.

Awesome lens, thanks so much for sharing. I am the same way about sleep. It's 1:00am and I am getting my second wind. Extra tough when it comes to getting up with kids. God bless and lots of love, Darcie
