How To Start Birding

Step into the wonderful world of birds

Many of us have enjoyed mostly watching the birds in our garden, trees and bushes from the front window of our house. But to get a more thrilling and natural feel, it is even better to go out into the wild and watch these birds in their own natural habitats.

When we mention about "Natural Habitat", it means going into the woods, or to those quiet and remote areas. But before planning to go on a bird watching outing, make sure to get few things prepared. First and the most important point is, be sure to wear the appropriate clothes that is suited for both the location that you'll be visiting, and the climate that area is presently experiencing.

Those who live in a warm desert area ,and plan to go up to a mountain for a day to watch birds, they will first have find to out if there's snow is falling on the mountain, or whether it's chilly during the daylight time.

You should of course take all that stuff like food or snacks, and plenty of water to prevent you in getting dehydrated.

Binoculars have become a great tool for bird watchers. They allow birders to get a closer view of birds and their nests. Many bird lovers use a notepad and pen so they can write notes about the activities of the birds they've seen, or sketch pictures of them while they're watching. Of course, nowadays you have those camcorders to catch those pictures in action.

Another important thing we have noticed is that many birders spend maximum time watching those birds from home or local parks. Some observe bird nests in their back yard from their windows. Yet, to see the widest variety of birds in the least amount of time, visiting a National Wildlife Refuge is highly encouraged. There are lots of them across the United States.

There are around 900 species of birds & recognizing each of them is very difficult. So, when you are visiting an area, do some research on birds native to that area. By doing some preparation, you will be able to more easily distinguish those bird species from each other. It is fun to keep track of those successfully viewed species -- as well as try to identify the ones you didn't know later.

How To Choose Binoculars for Bird Watching

Binoculars for bird watching are the most important piece of equipment of the birder toolbox. Selecting a good pair of binoculars will give long years of service and pleasure in bird watching. Let me share six tips that the avid birder can take note of when selecting the right type of binoculars.

1) Instant Focus Option Makes Things Clearer

When we observe birds from a long distance, we should be quicker to focus our binoculars, and then the chances of getting a successful sighting are possible. Be sure to that the binoculars include an instant focus option for the viewing of the birds at quickly.

2) Use An Eyepiece That Is Designed For High Magnification

The eyepiece happens to be the critical key for getting a comfortable viewing experience. The distance between the eyepiece lens and the eye, is critical as it leads to reduced eye strain and more comfort. Make sure that the eyepiece that is selected is designed for meeting high magnification ranges. This ensures a good match for watching the birds at a long range.

3) Coatings Can Be More Effective Than Size

In most of the designs of binoculars, it is found that the lens coating has a greater effect on the brightness than the binocular size. Since the birders often hold their binoculars for a long period of time, choosing a lightweight model having fully multi coated lenses will provide a brighter image & visibility of the birds that are being sighted. There are some models having lesser degrees of coatings, but the fully multi coated lenses always gives best results.

4) Use Optimal Binocular Size For Daytime Birding

When watching birds in the daylight, the size of binoculars can improve the brightness level more than one point. A 32mm binocular size is the best choice for having brightness gain.Above 32 mm sizes, increases in brightness is less. If you do spend much time on bird watching during daylight, then you can limit the binocular size to 32mm and save some weight.

5) Increase Your Field Of View With Lower Power Settings

Among the family of binoculars like Nikon, Bushnell, etc, as power and size of the binoculars increases, there is subsequent decrease in the field of view. The wider the field of view, the better it is to direct at the intended target and get a good fix on the bird you are looking for. Be aware of this feature when you plan to shop and look at the different models among the same family of binoculars.
