How to Use Cupcakes
All for one or one for all?
Cupcakes can stand alone, as individually decorated cakes, decorated together as a group, or combined with a full size cake. Consider displaying groupings of cupcakes on tiers, on trays or in unique groupings on elegant serving plates. This turtle cupcake cake used individual cakes, decorated to look like a whole turtle and was also accompanied by individual cupcakes, each with a baby turtle iced onto it with buttercream frosting.

Pirate party themes spawn a need for pirate cupcakes!
Consider a blue iced cupcake with a pirate ship floating on it, or make your cupcake into a tiny pirate's island with a palm tree and a treasure chest.
Cakes vs. Cupcakes
Which have more personality? The diminutive, but self contained cupcakes or the must-be-cut-and-divided cake? Do you prefer the elegant tiers or sheet of a whole birthday cake or a grouping of individual cupcakes?

Dragonfly cupcakes
easy to make
I made these dragonfly cupcakes to go with the frog cupcakes as part of our ongoing rainforest icing experiment. They were very fast and easy to decorate. Frog cupcakes
buttercream version
I have been experimenting with ways to make frogs in preparation for the upcoming rain forest birthday bash. I had tried fondant, and I think that is the way I'll ultimately go... but I wanted to see how good a frog could get in buttercream. K iced the cupcakes with the blue buttercream frosting and I used a wide decorating tip to pipe the green frog body, legs and head on. Two dabs of white made his eyes and we put mini-chocolate chips in them for the pupils. Ribbit. Finally got to try Sprinkles cupcakes
Every time I'd tried to go to Sprinkles in Newport Beach, the line was out the door. Twenty + people standing in the heat... I just couldn't do it. However, by some miracle, when I tried a driveby of the renowned cupcake bakery on Wednesday afternoon - no line! And even better, rock star parking, right in front. It was a sign that I had to break the diet and dine on Sprinkles. We tested the chocolate marshmallow (think gourmet hostess cream filled cupcake), the black and white (chocolate cuppy, white buttercream, choco sprinkles) peanut butter cup, dark chocolate and vanilla varieties. All were really, really good. I was hoping they wouldn't live up to the hype, but I can see why they are so popular.
Recently a cupcakery called "Frostings" opened in Lake Forest. My daughter tried it with a friend and declared it pretty good, but said Sprinkles is the real thing... and better than the ones at Frostings.

Yummy cupcakes from Sprinkles in Newport Beach. Finally!
Sprinkles Cupcakes
What's the deal with sprinkles cupcakes?
These gourmet cupcakes have become an institution, offering 21 different flavors, each elegantly topped with sprinkles or other toppings.
I wanted to see what they were all about... but when I tried, the line was out the door, around the walkway and circling back - they said the wait was about 90 minutes. What's up with that? Are they really good enough to be worth it or have they just succeeded in elevating the Sprinkles cupcake brand?
Since they now offer delivery in my area, I priced that option -- and it is $55 to have them delivered to my house. ACK. Um, that is a little more than I am willing to pay despite my devotion to cupcake research!
I'll try again another day and let you know or comment in our guestbook and tell us what you think of the famed (yet elusive) Sprinkles cupcakes.
Famous Cupcakes vs. Sprinkles Cupcakes

Sprinkles and cupcakes
Cupcakes and sprinkles are natural companions - sprinkles take a plain cupcake and add some panache. But, sprinkles aren't all alike -- look at our sprinkles cupcake photo gallery for some great ways to incorporate sprinkles and sparkle into your cupcake designs.

Bear Cupcake Cake
Pullapart bear
My daughter wanted a "cupcake cake" in the shape of a bear for her 6th birthday since we were taking two of her friends to "Build a Bear." It was pretty simple to do using normal sized cupcakes. I just made a full batch (vanilla marbled with chocolate) and arranged them on a tray, roughly in a bear shape. A lot of buttercream icing and about an hour later, and we had a sweet bear. Ideas for Decorating Cupcakes: Birthday
Fun ideas for innovative birthday cupcakes
We've all seen the standard cupcakes -- cake in a paper pleated cup, icing, maybe some sprinkles. But, cupcakes are so beyond the basics. What can you do for unique cupcake decorations? Try some of these ideas on your next birthday cupcakes:* Fresh fruit: Top each cupcake with icing and then a piece of fresh fruit such as a strawberry, or arrange several slices of fruit artfully.
* Cake toppers: Just because cupcakes are little doesn't mean you can't use cake toppers or candles on them. There are tons of fun characters and icons available.
* Chocolate ganache: Have a real chocolate lover to please? Top each cupcake with a thick layer of decadent chocolate ganache.
* Cookies as cupcake ornaments: Place a decorated sugar cookie (matching your birthday theme) atop each cupcake for a fun design.
* Candy toppings: Use pieces of candy to make bugs, flowers and other artistic designs on your cupcakes. M & Ms make great eyes, licorice ropes can be used as whiskers, gumdrops or orange slices can be cut into nearly any shape.
Eek! A mouse cupcake!
This clever cupcake is iced with yellow frosting and topped with a fondant mouse. Use it with a cat cake, as a side accompaniment to a cheesecake or just to fete your favorite rodent lover with a sweet treat.By the way, fondant isn't as hard to use as you might expect, and you can buy premade rolled fondant. Just use the skills you developed playing playDoh with your toddlers and make some simple shapes. Or, roll it flat and use cookie cutters to make shapes from it.
