What are Birthstones

The origin of Birthstones can be traced back to Biblical times.
To the ceremonial breastplate used by Moses' brother, a Jewish High Priest named Aaron. As described in Exodus 28, verses 15-30, the breastplate was adorned with 12 stones, one for each tribe of Israel. Twelve precious stones were also assigned to each of the Apostles in the New Testament.

By the Middle Ages, sets of stones were matched up with the angels and archangels of the Bible and the signs of the zodiac. In 18th century Poland, people used single stone amulets as a folk remedy for diseases and to ward off evil. They used a different stones each month.

The first know Diamond engagement ring was given by Archduke Maximillian of Austria to his bride Mary of Burgundy back in 1477.

May's Birthstone

May's Birthstone is Emerald

Emerald is also gemstone for the 20th and 35th wedding anniversary.

The name Emerald come from the Greek word smaragdos which means green stone.

June's Birthstone is the Pearl.

But that was not always the case. Junes traditional birthstone was the Alexandrite. But Alexandrite were so hard to come by that June's birthstone was changed to the Pearl.

Pearls are also used as gemstones for the 3rd and 30th years of marriage.

Pearls are one if the first known, if not the first known gemstone dating all the way back to when man first started to harvest food from the sea.

July's Birthstone

July's Birthstone is Ruby

Ruby is also gemstone for the 15th and 40th wedding anniversary.

Ruby was called the "Lord of Gems" by Ancient Hindus.

In the Dark Ages ruling Monarchs believed Rubies could help protect them against evil by anticipating its arrival. The thought the gems would darken when evil was near and return to its normal color once the danger had passed.

August's Birthstone

August's Birthstone is the Peridot.

Peridot is gemstone for the 16th wedding anniversary

The word Peridot and comes from the Arabic word "faridat" which means gem.

It was first mined by the Egyptians in 1500 B.C.
