Graveside Guestbook

From the lens Truly Bizarre Graves.

What's the weirdest grave you've seen?

What kind of grave do you want? I'm leaning toward a grave that looks like rock-candy myself.

Cool page and great grave pics... :)

I would have to say the most interesting grave I've seen is the Hi Jolly memorial in Quartzsite, Arizona. The Memorial at Brother Jonathan Cemetery is also fascinating, in large part because I don't know if anybody is actually buried there or if they've just moved the markers. Oh, and Billy the Kid's grave is also interesting because they've had to put a heavy metal lock on the stone AND enclose it in a locked cage because people have stolen the marker so many times.

I have to say I have never thought of what kind of grave I want until I read this lens. Hmmm....I guess I'll have to do some research and maybe visit a few graveyards. I'm sure there are some great ones in France. Or maybe Italy. Or Greece. Or...

There are indeed a few strange resting places out there. I'm planning to stay above ground rather than to occupy a grave site. I'm thinking of turning my ashes into a diamond when I go ;)

I believe it was on the old Ripley's Believe It Or Not series hosted by Jack Palance that I saw someone buried, riding on their favorite horse (stuffed of course).....UPSIDE DOWN. For me - I won't care.....I'll be dead. Throw me in a ditch or something. Thanks for the cool lens.

Hmm now I want people to walk past, stop and go HUH?! at my grave marker. I love the guy lying down holding a head in the air. I have no idea what that is supposed to signify but man, that's certainly the weirdest grave stone I've ever seen. Georges Rodenbach comes close though, that's a creepy one!

A post to my Facebook page thanking all of my friends for making my life enjoyable would be enough for me.

very interesting. In college I photographed a number of elaborate markers and art in cemetaries for photo classes. St. Cloud, Minnesota is known for quarrying and carving granite...and granite magnates have pretty elaborate displays in the cemetary.

Its nice to see that some people even die in style.
  • Margaret daSilva Oct 16, 2009 @ 10:40 pm | delete
I think the people whose graves we look at would be happy to know that years...even centuries...after they died someone they didn't know stopped a minute and read about them....thought about them.
Perhaps it's time to stop calling them 'bizarre' or 'weird' and use 'creative' or 'unusual'.

I know that the only pirate entombed is in the Sulina Cemetery in Romania (where the Danube flows into the Black Sea). The stone has the skull with crossbones and it's written in greek. The guy died around 1860

I have always loved cemeteries, they are so peaceful and full of history. It is sad to come across the gravestones of children, and I can be so overwhelmed with sadness if I'm not careful, but I still love them. There are so many interesting epitaphs and designs on the tombstones, and walking through the rows makes me feel as if I am travelling through time.

I love to walk through graveyards. They are so peaceful and quiet. I've seen some strange headstones but not as strange as the ones you have here.

I found the Mexican monuments to be most interesting. Thanks.

I love walking in graveyards. I never thought to look for weird graves though. I like the gravestones that reveal a bit of the "history" behind the person buried there. These stones certainly do that!

I also love to wander cemeteries to search for ancestors. I once found an obelisk with a man on one side and his three wives on the other surfaces. Some of my best memories are of spending Memorial Day Weekend with my Grandmother. Where I am from we plant red geraniums on the graves of all our ancestors on the Saturday before Memorial Day. Stop by my lens about my Grandmother to learn more about a truly wonderful woman.

Great lens! I love old gravestone carvings and have posted thousands of photos from New England cemeteries at http://www.gravematter.com.

What a "spiffy" lens. Have you seen the "headstone" shaped like a parking meter with the time expired flag? It was a testament by this woman's children to her wonderful sense of humor.

Your lens reminded me of an article about the "Happy Graveyard" or the "Merry Cemetery" in the small town of Sapanta, Romania.

What a cool lens! I love to go "graveyard hopping" and look for interesting graves. In college I checked out this book about grave markers, and I liked it so much I just renewed and and renewed it and I ended up having it the whole year! Anyway, 5 stars on your interesting lens!
  • Retro_Loco Mar 17, 2008 @ 9:34 pm | delete
Weird. Strange. Bizarre. I love it! Not sure why, but old cemeteries have always fascinated me. Maybe because my grandmother's old country house used to be right across the street (dirt road) from one, & my brothers, cousins & I played there! Great lens. Enjoyed it.

Power Rangers???? LOL This is great. I've lensrolled it on to my Death Can Be Funny lens.

Hello! I just clicked on other sites about gravestones from my own, and found yours :-) I also see you mention "wierd" a lot, which reminded me of my Wierd NJ Squidoo, but I have a LONG way to go to catch up to the number of Squids you have :-)

In the Philippines, I have seen 1 or 2 graves placed above the other graves. You can see almost 2 or 3 stories graves.
