Black Roses for Black Hearts?
Black roses remain popular over time in silk, feather, and dyed forms as well as memorable symbols in art, tattoos, and jewelry. Some believe that the black rose is a symbol of death, and others use it as a token of rare and true love full of mysticism and romance. Does it take a black heart to give or receive a black rose with a positive meaning?

Who really wants a Black Rose?
Unpopular Black Roses
On February 14th, 1910 - Valentine's Day, the New York Times published an interesting article on the black rose. The Black Rose - NY Times, 1910.Nearly 100 years ago, black roses were said to be nothing more than controversial and unappreciated. "Never to be prized"...but who really wants a black rose, anyways? ;-)
Black diamonds have the same problem with traditional meanings. Rare because they are only found in South America and Africa, these diamonds have been said to come from from Space itself: NewScientist - Rare Black Diamonds
Being such a popular symbol though, I haven't seen anyone share any positive aspects of the black rose. I appreciate the black known as all colors combined, and not the black that others feel is a void. It's timeless, classic, complements every other color, undefined "properly" so it will always be left up to interpretation, and never goes out of style. When something is dark and beautiful it causes you to wonder...whether you're trying to figure out the whole meaning, or left to determine which part is missing.

Yes, they are to me a true sign of love, if a guy gave me a black rose, it meant that he understands me and accepts my love for all things dark and mysterious.

of course! any idiot can give a red rose and have it be a "romantic gesture". Puh-lease. You can get red roses anywhere. I want something unique. Not only would I GIVE a black rose but I would dump a guy who gave me a red rose.

Yes. I was given a boquet of black roses and I collected ravens feathers to add to it. I had that boquet in the flower holder of my 2005 beetle for a very long time until it got too big and a cop pulled me over :( it was a gorgeous boquet.

- I have never seen a black rose but I am more of a light person so although I enjoy the beauty of most things I think that I would prefer a white flower instead.

- we had a black rose once but it got damaged when we had some renovations done and we never tried to get another one to replace it. Maybe its time we get a black one again... it was actually very very dark purple red... had petals that looked like velvet...

- The presence of all hues mixed together as pigment creates black - so it's really a true full-spectrum color for most tangible things. Adding this as a feature to Language of Flowers ... faved.
