Black roses do not exist as truly black in nature or floral shops. The closest black rose varieties are "Black Magic", "Black Bacarra", and "Nigrette" which are dark red, and "Black Beauty" and "Night Watchman" roses that are deep purple in color.
Black roses remain popular over time in silk, feather, and dyed forms as well as memorable symbols in art, tattoos, and jewelry. Some believe that the black rose is a symbol of death, and others use it as a token of rare and true love full of mysticism and romance. Does it take a black heart to give or receive a black rose with a positive meaning?

Unpopular Black Roses
On February 14th, 1910 - Valentine's Day, the New York Times published an interesting article on the black rose. The Black Rose - NY Times, 1910.
Nearly 100 years ago, black roses were said to be nothing more than controversial and unappreciated. Never to be prized...but who really wants a black rose, anyways? ;-)
Black diamonds have the same problem with traditional meanings. Rare because they are only found in South America and Africa, these diamonds have been said to come from from Space itself: NewScientist - Rare Black Diamonds
Being such a popular symbol though, I haven't seen anyone share any positive aspects of the black rose. I appreciate the black known as all colors combined, and not the black that others feel is a void. It's timeless, classic, complements every other color, undefined "properly" so it will always be left up to interpretation, and never goes out of style. When something is dark and beautiful it causes you to wonder...whether you're trying to figure out the whole meaning, or left to determine which part is missing.
