How The Bladder Works
We likely all know that the body stores urine in the bladder. During urination the muscles in the bladder contract and tighten. When the muscles tighten it forces the liquid out of the bladder through the urethra. The urine is then forced out of the body. The muscles surrounding the urethra and the bladder are controlled by spinal nerves. When something happens to disturb the action of the muscles, incontinence can start to occur.
Incontinence can create problems because this can happen without warning. People can become embarrassed and quite self conscious when bladder control problems start to emerge.
The majority of bladder control problems are treatable. The problem is that many leave the problem too long due to embarrassment. The first thing you should do if you're experiencing bladder control problems is speak to a doctor. They will take an entire medical history and check it against any other illnesses you may have had. If your problem cannot be diagnosed at this stage then further tests will be performed.
Bladder control is something that we all take for granted. That is of course until we loose it. Bladder control can present some embarrassing and stressful situations, however one should not panic. The first thing to do is consult a doctor and get some advice. With some testing and checking you may find that your bladder control problems are nothing to get too worried about.>More

Types Of Incontinence
One of the most common types of bladder control problems is stress incontinence. This happens when the bladder leaks urine because of some kind of physical stress. Exercise, laughing, sneezing, coughing and lifting is all things that can put pressure on the bladder and cause some fluid to leak. It is most common in younger to middle aged women. It can be linked to child birth but cases have started to occur around the time of menopause.
Another bladder control problem is urge incontinence. This is where people cannot old their urine in time to reach a toilet. This can strike healthy individuals but is more common in those with diabetes, Alzheimer's, stroke victims and MS sufferers. It should be checked as it can be a sign of bladder cancer.
A third type of bladder control problem is overflow incontinence. This is when small amounts of urine leak from a full bladder. Men should have this checked if it is happening to them. This could be the sign of enlarged prostate and other problems.
Finally there is functional incontinence. This is more common in older people. Their bladders function quite normally however other health problems prohibit them from getting to a toilet on time.
Knowing the type of incontinence you have it the first step in treating it effectively. The sooner you know the sooner you can get back to your life.>More

Treatments For Incontinence
It may sound strange but one of the most effective ways to treat bladder control problems is through training. With training, you can change the way in which your bladder stores and looses urine for the better. Through a series of pelvic muscle exercises, you can start to strengthen the muscles around your bladder. This will help lessens the stress and urge type of incontinence. These exercises help you to strengthen your muscles which will help you hold the urine longer. This will allow for time to get to a toilet and less stress and worry.
The exercises themselves are quiet simple to perform. The simply involve squeezing the pelvic floor muscles. This over time can help you regain control over your muscles and bladder control. Your doctor will be able to best advise you on how to perform the exercises and how often they should be done.
There are other treatments for bladder control problems. Biofeedback is a method that has helped many. It helps you become more aware of the signals in the body. Eventually you may regain control over your bladder muscles and urethra. This will great decrease the likelihood on incontinence and bladder problems.
Others may want to practice timing. By recording when you urinate and when your bladder leaks, you can start to see patterns arising. When you learn these patterns you can deal with the leakage problems by emptying it before it has a chance.
If you start to experience bladder control problems the important thing to remember is they are nothing to be ashamed of. Get to your doctor and get treated. Don't suffer in silence.>More

Evasive Treatments For Problems
There are drugs that can be used to improve bladder functions. Some drugs actually relax the muscles so the bladder can empty more fully. This prevents additional urine from building up to quickly reducing the urge to use the toilet so frequently. There are other drugs that do the opposite. They tighten the muscles in an attempt to stop leakage. The type of drug will depend greatly on your particular type of incontinence.
These drugs can also produce side effects so a doctor's consultation is always necessary. Prolonged use of these medications is also not recommended unless done so by your doctor.
Another approach to treating certain types of incontinence is implants. These are chemicals that are injected into the urethra to add bulk. This extra bulk will help to close the urethra and stop leaking. This may have to be repeated several times as the body will naturally rid itself of these chemicals.
Surgery isn't something that people look forward to however; it can successfully treat and cure many types of incontinence. The surgeries are relatively simple but the decision still should not be taken lightly. Some surgeries involve changing the position of the bladder. This helps it to empty and fill more efficiently. This type of surgery is also helpful when an enlarged prostate is the problem. Some surgeries require the bladder to be tied and secured. This helps prevent leakage and is used when the problem is more severe. You doctor is the best person to consult when looking at surgery as an option.
Sometimes a more evasive approach is needed to get better bladder control. Although no one relishes the thought of these types of treatment, they are safe and quite effective.>More

Symptoms Of Problems
Urgency is one of the most common symptoms in bladder control problems. If you feel like you have to urinate immediately, and you feel this way often it might be a good idea to consult your doctor.
On the opposite side of the coin, hesitancy is another common symptom. If you are trying to urinate but have a difficult time getting a steady stream of urine going, then again seek the advice of your doctor.
Frequency is another common symptom. If you find your having to urinate often then this could be a sign. If you find that you frequently having to get up in the night to use the toilet then see your health care provider.
Dysuria, or pain and burning while you urinate are another cause for concern. This usually occurs when you have a bladder infection. The infection itself needs to be treated as it can cause future bladder control problems.
Hemteria is another possible symptom. This means that there is blood in the urine. The urine will usually appear pinkish and cloudy. It could be an indicator of an infection or other problems as well.
If you experience dribbling, especially after you have finished urinating then this is another indication. It could be a sign that your bladder isn't emptying properly.
Finally, straining is another symptom. If you have to strain or bear down to urinate then you definitely should seek the advice of a doctor.
Knowing and accepting the symptoms is the first step in getting better. If you have experienced any of the above symptoms then the best advice is to consult a doctor.>More

Urinary Incontinence - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Methods part 1
Women are more likely than men to have urinary incontinence. This type of incontinence is a constant dripping of urine. Urinary incontinence is not associated with increased mortality. Treatment depends on what's causing the problem and what type of incontinence you have. Age is a risk factor for UI. Older individuals may have medical conditions that impair continence. It is often found in people who have conditions such as diabetes, stroke, dementia, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis, but may be an indication of other diseases or conditions that would also warrant medical attention. Urinary incontinence is the inability to control the release of urine from your bladder. The problem has varying degrees of severity. Incontinence is treatable and often curable at all ages. If your urinary incontinence is caused by a medical problem, the incontinence will go away when the problem is treated.>More

Herbal Remedies for UTI
The use of antibiotics, for UTI or any other condition can have side effects and if not checked in time can lead to further complications. Moreover, bacteria get used to the common antibiotics and it is not easy to research and invent antibiotics for newer strains of bacteria fast enough. There are quite a few herbal remedies that prove very effective in preventing and treating urinary tract infections. Herbal medicines coupled with a change in style of living and some help from a supportive system can work wonders in many cases.
For urinary tract infection cure as well as bladder infection treatment there are some commonly accepted herbs that have been clinically proved. Herbal remedies can be taken in different forms as well as by mixing them in water while taking a Sitz bath.
While choosing an herbal remedy, it is better to use only those of high quality and authentic formula extracts to avoid synthetic content to bind or fill. Most herbs can be taken as tea, in capsule form, or as a tincture diluted in water.
Goldenseal root and Uva Ursi work as an antimicrobial agent and an antiseptic with soothing and strengthening attributes, respectively. Other herbs that also have a proven track record and can be considered include:
Cleavers (Galium aparine) for treating urinary tract infections,
Marshmallow root (Althea officinalis) and Usnea Lichen, for a soothing effect on the urinary tract,
Buchu, and Corn silk (Zea Mays) for increasing the flow of urine, and
Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) for its astringent and tissue healing properties.
Homoeopathy, though not directly connected to herbs in its totality, uses herbs, minerals, metals, and other organic ingredients for preparation of its remedies. Homoeopathic remedies should be taken only after consulting a qualified consultant as homoeopathy is a holistic system of curing and medication prescribed depends on the overall symptoms including the minutest of details about the patient, which would appear as irrelevant to a layman.
Diabetic patients with UTI, however, should take homoeopathic remedies only in water and not in the usual lactose pellet form. Four such homeopathic remedies for specific UTI symptoms are:
Cantharis, can be considered for easing "burning" pain on urination.
Apis mellifica, has a marked soothing effect in conditions where pain aggravates with heat.
Staphysagria, should be considered when sexual intercourse is painful.
Sarsasparilla is best for pain even after urination.
Sitz baths come under the category of hydrotherapy. They are baths where the water level in a bath is recommended to be just enough to cover buttocks, upper thighs, and lower abdomen. The baths need to include some of the herbs mentioned earlier that are antimicrobial and soothing. The specific choice of herb depends on individual symptoms.
Contrary to common belief, herbal medicines prove to be very effective if they are taken for the symptoms they are meant to cure. Although herbal remedies do not have any side effects, they should still be taken under the guidance of a trained herbal therapist.>More

Urinary Tract Infection Medication: Antibiotics for UTI
Till the time the extensive research successfully coordinates all the findings to arrive at new treatments, antibiotics will remain the most common medication in the field of urinary tract infection cures.
One of the major factors that necessitate immediate attention to UTI is its capacity to take a serious turn and advance to a condition known as pyelonephritis ? infection in kidneys. This condition, if not taken care of may lead to renal failure, for which the only cure available is dialysis or a kidney transplant. Both these are highly traumatic options.
Negligence in getting UTI looked into by a competent physician can even lead to another complication if the pressure regulation tissues in the kidneys are damaged. This leads to blood pressure dropping to dangerous levels.
Uncomplicated UTI is easily curable but many complicated conditions require a prolonged treatment to halt the advance of infections to the kidneys.
Anti bacterial drugs are very effective in almost all cases barring a few very complex conditions of UTI. Depending upon the results of the laboratory tests of urine whereby the offending bacteria is identified, and sensitivity tests to arrive at the most suitable antibiotic, the doctor has plenty of antibiotics to choose form.
For routine, uncomplicated urinary tract infection, trimethoprim, trimethoprim/ sulfamethoxazole, amoxicillin and ampicillin are the most effective. Recently a new class of drugs has been approved for urinary tract infection cure. This class is termed as quinolones. Quinolones include four drugs, namely, ofloxacin, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and trovafloxin.
For complicated cases of UTI, such as infections caused by Mycoplasma or Chlamydia a separate set of antibiotics ? tetracycline, trimethoprim/ sulfamethoxazole or doxycycline ? are used and have given good results.
For women who have had three UTIs, a low dose of trimethoprim/ sulfamethoxazole or nitrofurantoin, at bedtime, helps in minimizing risks of recurrence. Women are more prone to recurring UTI and may even need a single dose of antibiotic after sexual intercourse.>More
