Cool Vitality

Matcha is made from dried green tea leaves that have had the stems and veins removed and then finely ground into a powder. They contain one of the highest natural sources of antioxidants and chlorophyll. It is packaged in metal tins that vacuum sealed for freshness. The powder can be used to make hot tea (often used in Japanese tea ceremony) or it can be added to other foods like French toast, muffins, ice cream, sauces and in this case blended drinks.

The first time I had Matcha in a blended drink it was in an establishment in Canada called Teopia. The blended drink was a refreshing blend of pear and guava but it cost $6. A great one time treat but too expensive for a regular drink. I set out to create an acceptable make-at-home equivalent and I think I have succeeded. My husband even says that it's better than the $6 alternative. I hope you will give it a try and leave your comments and alternative methods in the guest book.

Matcha Powdered Green Tea

"Matcha tea is a Japanese powdered green tea. When drinking it, whole tealeaves are consumed, not just the steep off tealeaves, as with other teas. High-grade matcha (thick and thin) are made in limited amounts in Japan. Matcha is cultivated by covering tea plants with bamboo mats several weeks prior to harvest, increasing the chlorophyll content. The harvested leaves are dried and stone-ground into matcha powder."

Directions

Sift 1/2 tsp of matcha, add hot water, whisk to foamy and set aside.

Add ice cubes, juice, Splenda, banana, and yogurt to a blender. Use crush ice mode to break up ice until it's small enough to use the puree button. Puree to smooth. Add whisked matcha and continue to blend for another minute.

Serve in large glass with straw. This makes one very large serving.

Getting Out the Lumps

The bamboo whisk is the best tool for blending the dry matcha with water. In a pinch you can use the traditional kitchen whisk but you will never get out all the lumps. I purchased mine online at ebay for $6.50.

"Here are all of the essential tools you need to prepare matcha tea at home. This set includes a 20 gram tin of "Yugen" thin grade matcha, bamboo whisk for frothing tea, sifter and bamboo tea scoop. Why haven't we included a teabowl? While a teabowl is ideally suited for making matcha, it is not essential. A deep, ceramic cereal or rice bowl works too."

Here is interesting video footage from YouTube of the ceremonial steps involved in a green tea ceremony which involves the use of matcha.

Wow...I love it...I paid 4 dollars for a large green tea latte...it had soy milk and 2 tsp of sweetened matcha. I felt really good after drinking. I then went to my local health food store and paid 19.99 for 10 matcha sealed packets. I blended almond milk, fresh pinapple, fresh ginger, and 3 packets of matcha and a bit of protein powder from hemp (just a tad) and it was delicious. Its expensive but it is great. Today I did the same thing, but a added a large spoonful of coconut bliss vanilla island ice cream with the 3 packets of matcha. Still the protein powder dab as well. Okay, it is amazing...I feel on top of the world...what a discovery. I am addicted. I hope you all enjoy your new found matcha experience!! I will continue to experiment would love to trade receipes Ro organiqueherbs@gmail.com (let me know how it goes)

I drink 3-4 double mugs of green tea a day. Have for years. This sound worth trying for sure. I'll check my local health food stores. And, of course, there's always online. Very interesting lens!

I love matcha tea. I got some this past winter in Los Angeles at a Tea Shop called Dr. Tea's. I like it hot with agave nectar and soy milk. Now I'll have to try it cold. Great lens, Your quotes are perfect. I need to get one of those bamboo whisks.
