Looking for work and need a resume?
One size does not fit all! The resume has to relate directly to the position for which it is being used.
Read the job ad, or the job description carefully. With a highlighter, mark everything it asks for that you have.
Now either write a new resume or edit an existing one to itemize what you did that matches it, and how that benefitted your employer. Don't expect the employer to work out how you would be as asset to him or her - explain it!
Stories offer more proof that you really did what you are claiming, so one liners that tell a story are powerful.
* Responsible, reliable, hard worker
is a one liner that itemizes very desirable skills. The problem is however, that anyone could write that on their resume just because it sounds good. And even when you tell a story there is no proof that it's true, but it gives the employer more of an idea what you mean than just the descriptive words alone.
* Responsible, reliable, hard worker: regularly worked late or took work home voluntarily to ensure deadlines met with quality work
Doesn't that sound more convincing? Now you're ready to go to the interview, have the employer ask you about these occasions and gives you the opportunity to talk about something you think will definitely sway the interviewer in your favor!
