A sample blue screen looks as following:

First, a quick introduction of what the Blue Screen of Death is. This error happens whenever Windows xp detects a major problem from which it cannot recover. The Windows operating system stops all operations and it shows diagnostic information on the blue screen. All Windows XP stop errors will be numbered according to the reasons that caused the fault in the first place, these error codes will help in the diagnosis of the problem so it might be a good idea to write down the error code number whenever they appear. It is possible to work out the problem just from this code or at least take note of the full code for further advice from a computer technician or even from the internet. The very first thing I always do when this happens is open my computer case and take out and reset my memory modules and the restart the computer. Sometime a bad connection with the memory can cause a lock up leading to a blue screen. If this doesn't work I will then check my PC has good ventilation and none of the air vents are blocked, as overheating can also cause this to happen.
The problem might also be your hard drive, you may have to renew your old one and reinstall your Windows XP from scratch. Always remember to backup your important data on an external drive or DVD disc just in case you loose any.

In Windows XP, stop messages are displayed for mainly 5 reasons

3. Installation errors. The Windows XP installation process is the most sensitive time for hardware or disk errors. If there is a problem with your computer's hardware setup a stop error is likely occur and stop the installation.
4. Shutdown errors. When your computer hasn't been shut down properly. This can damage some of the Windows system files which are in operation while the computer is running.
5. Virus Infected computers: The BSOD will also be displayed if a virus has been detected and has damaged some of the vital startup system files Windows needs. Some viruses are designed to target the startup files in your system, like the boot.ini file.

Nice! I never actually classify my BSOD experiences. And you categorize it into 5 simple easy-to-understand category. But fixing BSODs can be done in less than thirty minutes if you have an internet connection. I suggest you look into my lens, Never Reinstall Windows XP again! I hope you'll like it.
