Bodie- Where the Past Refused to Die
Step into Bodie and Discover the Wild West.
Bodie, California, was a prosperous gold mining town that reached a population high of nearly ten thousand people. At the town's height it claimed 65 saloons, two banks, a brass band, a railroad stop, several newspapers, a Chinatown, and a jail. The jail was busy with shootout, barroom brawls, and stagecoach holdups. However, the town declined following World War 1. Some people stubbornly stuck with the town. However, after World War 2 the town was essentially dead. The state of California received the Bodie as a gift and now maintains about two hundred buildings in a state of arrested decay. Bodie State Historic Park, a National Landmark, can be reached on California State Route 270, a ten mile drive from US 395. The last three miles are unpaved and unpassable during the winter. The elevation is 8400 feet, so it can be hot in the summer and cold in the winter.

- We enjoyed a day at Bodie. It was a very interesting day. I enjoyed the inside of the church and I liked the store. It was neat to see the old houses and imagine what it would have been like to live in Bodie. It would be nice to go again because there was so much to see. Reading some stories about Bodie, CA and Aurora, NV makes me feel like it was really the wild west. Thanks for doing a lens on Bodie.
