Books that Christopher loves!
I'm Christopher Scott and I love to read!
Thanks to a recommendation from my friend Lewis Smile, I've created this lens to highlight the great books that I've read.
I hope to provide some insight and advice on what great books are out there. Most of the time I read books on leadership, nonprofit organizations, attitude, relationships, business, and time management.
Enjoy!
Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us
This is a great leadership book.
I had the pleasure of watching Seth Godin make a 30 minute presentation on the TRIBES book at the Catalyst Conference back in October, and it was a great experience.
In Tribes, Seth provides a fresh new look on leadership from a marketing standpoint that is based on two principles about what you must do and have for a tribe:
1) A common interest
2) A way to communicate
Seth digs in deep for this book about the ways and examples of leading a tribe of people and how you can make it a reality in life.
One thing that I really enjoyed is that Seth doesn't premise the idea that to be a leader you have to be super gifted and anointed to lead people. He also doesn't presuppose that you need a large following of people to lead.
Basically you just need a small group of people who share your interest and you need a way to communicate to them.
A very good fresh leadership book.

Singled Out: How Singles Are Stereotyped, Stigmatized, and Ignored, and Still Live Happily Ever After
A friend at church let me borrow this book, Singled Out by Bella DePaulo.
It's one of those books that I read the first two chapters and the last three chapters and got a pretty good feel for the message Dr. Depaulo was communicating.
I enjoyed learning and developed a better understanding of people's views of singles and how people who are single looked at by society. Being a single person I could relate to much of what she was saying.
One thing I wish she would have communicated in the book as a argument on being single related to the bible and religious peoples by many people. I felt that is a critical element to understanding people who are single. I want to know what the Bible says about people who are single, and what God thinks about people who are single? What is God's will for people who are single? Is there a reason that keeps people single?
Overall,
I thought the book was pretty good. It was thought provoking and is a pretty good book for individuals who are currently single, or for anyone who would like to develop a better understanding for people who choose to be single.

Culture Making: Recovering Our Creative Calling
I recently finished reading this great book titled, Culture Making by Andy Crouch.
In the book, Mr. Crouch makes some great insights and takes an interesting stance as it relates to culture within the faith and church sector. Even though I didn't read the book specifically from a faith point of view, virtually every concept that Andy talks about is applicable to the secular sector of life and business. The only difference is that he uses biblical examples and stories instead of secular based examples and stories.
To be honest, I absolutely loved reading the book.
Andy gives an amazing amount of insight into how culture is actually created by what we want in our world. How we create culture as a way to support our wants and what we want our world to look like.
He states that the only way we can create and change culture is to "make more of it."
I also learned a lot about why Jesus had such an impact on the planet. In Jesus' day, he was the ultimate culture changer. He was the guy that rocked the boat and was always going against the grain and going against the common order of the land of that day.
Jesus had such a significant impact because he was a culture maker and a culture changer. His 3 years of preaching drastically changed the world's culture for the better. But his resurrection from the dead was the single catalytic moment that changed more of culture than any other event in our world's history.
For anyone interested in understanding how culture works and how culture is created and changed, Andy Crouch's book is one of the best books on the bookshelf available right now.
I highly recommend it

Living Life Boldly
It's been about a year since I read this book, but it was a great one.
Ted Roberts is the Pastor of a very large church that focuses most of it's time and energy to helping men addicted to drugs, alcohol, and sex.
Ted doesn't hold anything back, and he gives an honest story of his own life and how he came to Christ.
As I looked through Living Life Boldly I noticed almost every page I had marked up by underlining quotes and circling stories.
This book has lots of great content, one I highly recommend for any young person wanting to live for Christ.

- Thanks for providing the list. I have read many of the books on your list but "Called to Serve" is not one of them. I am adding it to my list of books to read very soon.

- My goodness, you are an avid reader. I love to read, but for pleasure only, so I've never read any of the books you have here. They must be good, though, if you keep reading them.

- Some great books there. I'm in the process of setting up a life coaching charity to help disadvantaged people turn their lives around and am always on the lookout for new angles on coaching.
