Bookstore tourism started as a grassroots effort to support locally owned and operated bookshops, many of which have struggled to compete with large bookstore chains and online retailers.

The National Council on Bookstore Tourism
The National Council on Bookstore Tourism is a non-profit organization led by Larry Portzline that partners with booksellers, publishers, the travel industry, arts organizations, government agencies and independent business alliances across the U.S. to promote the concept of bookstore tourism.
A writer and college instructor from Harrisburg, PA, Larry Portzline is the originator of the grassroots Bookstore Tourism movement.
He is currently planning the Why Indie Bookstores Matter Tour, a 10-week, cross-country road-trip that will include stops at 200 independent bookstores.
