Apple does it again, now you can run Windows natively on Mac, how will this impact the pc industry, what will happen to Mac video games, will people start switching to Mac in their thousands?
Looks like it's working
Survey indicates Boot Camp will boost Mac purchases - 19.04.06
"20 percent of those surveyed said Apple's new Boot Camp software makes them more likely to buy a Mac in the next 12-18 months. Among respondents with 'definite' plans to buy a computer in that timeframe, an even higher 42 percent said Boot Camp makes them 'more likely' to purchase a Mac."
My take on Boot Camp
It's about risk displacement - 17.04.06
I've read quite a few articles about boot camp now I think people have over-complicated the issue, some theories verge on conspiratorial. For me boot camp and any descendant of this software serves one key function, risk displacement.
It is not aimed that people that are 'into computers' they already have a Mac and probably a Linux and XP box too.
Boot camp is aimed at your average computer user.
People that are curious about Macs, people who are sick of their boring old Dell, and the fact that they have to re-install everything from scratch every three months.
But before buying a mac, these people might ask:
"what about the accounting software that I use to run my small business? What about the library of WWII games that I have accumulated, am I going to have to get rid of those?"
NO, not with boot camp. The risk is displaced, minimised, they shrunk it. Now I can ease myself into OSX on mac, and uncle Jobs gets a heck of a lot more people to buy a Mac as their next computer.
Just picture the sales pitch. The sales person will go through the long list of features/specs that this shiny, sexy looking iMac has, the average Jo is pretty much sold on the design and 'cool factor' that all Mac products exude. But still, the sales person needs to 'close' the sale. So what's the perfect line? Probably something like 'oh and you can run windows on this machine, if you have any essential programs you are running on your current PC'.
I'm sure the sales person will make it sound a little more spontaneous than that, but I think you get the idea.
It's like the 'switch' campaign finally got some teeth. The risk of me trying this new, unfamiliar computer operating system is minimised. Boot camp minimises the risk for a lot of average computer users to switch to Mac.
