My (Now) Favorite Band... "But WHY?" (Elbow in your ribs) 'Cuz That's My KID
Hi, and welcome to our brand-new lens!!!
Those of you who have visited my other lenses know that I am usually pet-oriented. Well, there's a side of me that you haven't met yet -- the REALLY wild side -- the rock'n'roller at heart. I was going to keep that quiet, but I now find myself being chased out of the closet to confront my rotten little secret. Your kids can make you do some pretty strange things ... Well, that's OK -- this isn't about me, Folks :)
This is the saga of five (just recently) teenage boys -- growing up in a tiny fishing village situated on a shoreline somewhere in Smalltown, USA -- who want to be rock stars <!!!>Â Yes, an ancient but time-honored theme ... One that most of us had secretly harbored in our own hearts when we were newly-teened.
This lens has been inspired by these five fine young men ... and created in the hopes of adding one more vestige of encouragement to their lofty aspiration -- and is intended to be a tangible gesture to them that they are supported and backed in full, no matter what the project they are endeavoring to achieve may entail.
I now affectionately refer to them as Bored-sters. I'm going to give each of them their own section below, and ask them to write their own bios here. (Um, they don't know that yet.) My own budding Jimi Hendrix is Josh. The other guys are Cain, Evan, Zane and Noah.
Somehow, I have come to hate the word "bored". I think it has something to do with Son Josh's far-too-oft-expressed utterances declaring his mental condition -- accompanied with the now-despised word "bored".
However, when Josh presented me with the name of his Band (Oh, you have a Band???) -- "Board of Education," (which I still think is pretty darned clever -- wish I had thought of that) ... I got to thinking about it, and the creative juices got the better of me.
He mentioned that they would like to have their own "logo," which is understandable. He wanted to know if any other (famous) bands had a "logo" featuring "guitars crossed at the neck." That gave me some idea of what the Bored-sters had on their minds.
So I got to work on it ... Created two different logos for them -- featured at the top of this Intro. It was such great fun drawing those for them, that I created more artwork for them to use on their future T-shirts (Evan has a favorite that he wants for their "Touring Shirts"), coffee mugs, bumper stickers and the like. I'll be showing them all off here, LOL.

BORED-sters Achieve Honor Roll Status
FLASH !!! Hold the Presses !!! All Five -- Count 'em, FIVE -- BORED-sters Made the HONOR ROLL !!!
Yep, Josh showed me the newspaper article ;) I'm Celebrating !!!
Josh came rushing in this afternoon -- a HUGE grin from ear to ear, and withdrew a folded newspaper clipping from his pocket.
Unfolding it carefully (um, not usually a word that I would use to describe Josh), he proudly (and rightfully so) pointed to his very own name -- in print. "Evan and Cain made it, too ..." he proclaimed happily, while quickly scanning the newsprint in search of everyone else's names to show me, as well. "Here's Zane ..." says he, and I added, "And there's Noah."
Well, I am so proud of all of them that I can hardly stand it. So naturally, I had to hurry right on in here to announce to the whole world this Band's amazing accomplishment.
Oh -- and it looks like nobody's gonna get grounded today ... well, at least not because of poor grades ;)
Congratulations, Guys ... Oh, and Noah? Rock On.
So, in recognition of these five BRILLIANT young men, I have added some other HONOR ROLL recipients (in one way or another) below.
Oh, and by the way -- Thunder Over Michigan 2005: (You will see better pictures in the 2006 video right next to it.) The B17G Flying Fortresses' Air Parade of Vintage WWII WarBirds... BORED Website Updates
Bored of Ed-uCAYshun: The OFFICIAL Website
Yes, there really is!!!
Evan emailed me with the link to the Band's official website -- which is Noah's own creation.I must say, I was very impressed with how well written and presented the page is, and I truly want to encourage Noah to continue creating such things. Besides, I know he'll have lots more to keep adding to the Band's site, and I hope he'll expand his capabilities in that direction.
Please copy and paste this link into a new window to see Noah's handiwork -- http://www.freewebs.com/boredofeducationband
Oh, by the way ... in Evan's own words in his email: "P.S. There is a little piano intro thing on the website that I can't get off, so you might want to turn down your speakers."
In Noah's email to me this week, he said: "... I've updated the site, and one thing you might notice is I hope to go public earlier than expected (thank you Josh, Cain). Sometime around 2010, and hopefully a short album later this year."
Noah Speaks ...
"Our Style ... our influences..."
Noah Speaks ...
Our Influences: Our influences come from all genres (of rock) and all decades, starting with the early Beatles in the '50s. One huge influence is Jimi Hendrix, our guitarist's personal favorite. Our bassist likes the alt/rock scene, from Green Day to Rush. Others include Brits like the Who, Iggy Pop, Led Zeppelin, and Yes, Southern like Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers Band, Bon Jovi, Bad Company, and Hootie and the Blowfish.
Some more modern favorites include AC/DC, Poison, Twisted Sister, Dio (although our guitarist still prefers Ozzy Osbourne's Black Sabbath), the Dave Grohl Nirvana/Foo Fighters legacy, KISS, and Aerosmith. Although varied, our music influences give us an edge many other don't have -- from the power of Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young's "Woodstock," to the raw rebellion of KISS's "Strutter" and the psychedelia of the Grateful Dead's "Truckin'" and "St Stephen."
Grumpi Grunts ... (frown)
Gripes, Grumbles and Rumbles ...... From The Old Grouch...
"In the immortal words of my father ... and his father before HIM ... 'Turn that @#%& DOWN !!!'"
Question: "Exactly WHEN Does It Become TOO LOUD???" Answer: When YOU Become Too OLD;)
I'll be adding to this regularly;)
When I was 13 (circa 1970), my father's prized possessions were his "hi-fi" stereo and his Sinatra albums. Honestly, though, they were more than merely "prized," -- they were downright sacred. It never even entered his mind that ANYONE would ever be so bold (and stupid) as to DARE to violate the sanctity of this living room shrine by desecrating it with the likes of Rock'n'Roll records. (By the way, Dad's idea of Rock'n'Roll consisted of Elvis, the Beatles and, worse-case-scenario, the Rolling Stones, LOL.)I had two bucks burning a hole in my pocket (took me four hours of babysitting to earn it), and Black Sabbath boring a hole through my heart. My mom drove me down to the local K-mart, where I proudly plunked down my $1.96 and hurried back to the car with my new treasure -- my very first ever record album: "Paranoid."
I rushed into the house, carefully removed Sinatra from the turntable and replaced it with my new purchase. Oh, yeah -- had to crank the volume to the max, too -- watching my mother's face become paler by the moment.
Dad, enter Stage-Right: White-faced, jaw dropped somewhere down around his belt-line -- looking dazed and confused -- says he: "Turn that @#%& DOWN..." Ummmm, Dad, exit Stage-Left ...
Well, ahem. This isn't going to be easy to put delicately, so I'll just come right on out and say it: pppppppppppppppfffffffffffffffffffftttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt ... Today (circa 2008) I'm just glad I'm finally going deaf ... (too much Cream, AC/DC and KISS, methinks maybe)... Eh??? Whassssssat you say, Sonny?
How's that for starters?
I'll be adding to this regularly as more "reasons" occur to me ... probably beginning with the amplifier ... ("Where are those headphones that I gave you???")
Anyway, I am still the author of this lens (albeit, it ain't 'bout ME, LOL), so I'm gonna add MY two-cents worth, too. I hereby claim this li'l corner of BORED for OLD (over 29) PEOPLE. And we're gonna have OLD PEOPLE music vids here. And we're gonna call 'em "Grumpi's Groupies." So THERE.
Is it my imagination -- or have I started getting a little grouchy in my old age???

As I mentioned earlier, Noah gently "reminded" me this week that I'm running "a little" behind in updating our Monthly Featured Band.
Generally speaking, the intention of this module is to showcase a band that BOE considers to be influential to their style of music, highlighting a different group each month (or more often if we feel like it).
As you will recall, we kicked off this feature section with a little band known as TSO -- Trans-Siberian Orchestra. I think however, that rather than completely removing each band as we replace them in this section, we'll store a link for them in the new " " module below ... That's my fault, though ... I just can't bear the thought of discarding them entirely ;)
In the way of introducing this month's featured influence, I think that Noah said it best in his email: "I think this month we need to go to the very roots of hard rock -- The Beatles."
But WHERE to BEGIN ???

When Beatle-mania Reigned Supreme
Beatle-mania Rocked the World ... 1964 - Present
Beatlemania swept the world in 1964. The Beatles were everywhere. Of course on TV, radio and records, but they were marketed like a Star Wars film. Images of the Beatles were on lunch boxes, games, toys, magazines, jewelry, cartoons and so much more. Now 44 years later, Beatle memorabilia is still everywhere.

Demise of a Legend
John Lennon: 1940-1980
John Ono Lennon (born John Winston Lennon), Oct. 9, 1940 - Dec. 8, 1980
John Lennon, was an English rock musician who gained worldwide fame as one of the founders of The Beatles. In his solo career, Lennon wrote and recorded songs such as "Give Peace a Chance" and "Imagine".Lennon channelled his penchant for controversy into his work as a peace activist, artist, and author. Lennon had two sons: Julian, with his first wife Cynthia Lennon, and Sean, with his second wife, avant-garde artist Yoko Ono.
Lennon was murdered in New York City on December 8, 1980. In 2002, respondents to a BBC poll on the 100 Greatest Britons voted Lennon into eighth place. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Lennon number 38 on its list of "The Immortals: The Fifty Greatest Artists of All Time" and ranked The Beatles at number 1.

Second Legend Silenced
George Harrison: 1943-2001
George Harrison, Feb. 25, 1943 - Nov. 29 2001)
George Harrison was an influential English rock guitarist, singer, songwriter, author and sitarist best known as the lead guitarist of The Beatles. Following the band's demise, Harrison had a successful career as a solo artist and later as part of the Traveling Wilburys super group where he was known as both Nelson Wilbury and Spike Wilbury. He was also a film producer, with his production company Handmade Films, involving people as diverse as Madonna and the members of Monty Python.Harrison's cancer recurred in 2001 and was found to have metastasised. Despite aggressive treatment, it was soon found to be terminal. He set about getting his affairs in order and spent his final months with his family and close friends. He also worked on songs for an album with his son Dhani, which was released after his death.
Harrison's death at the age of 58 was ascribed to lung cancer that had metastasised to the brain. He was cremated and, although it was widely reported that his ashes were scattered in the Ganges River, the ceremony was not conducted at the expected time.

BORED ... Meet The Band
Noah -- Fearless Leader -- Lead Guitar
... AND the Brains Behind the Band ... Rock On.
Noah corresponds via email with me, and pretty well keeps me "in the loop" with things that are going on with Bored.BEHOLD !!! The elusive Noah speaks -- finally revealing his innermost Bored Beginnings :)
"I started playing guitar about three years back in December. My aunt gave me her old Aria classical guitar, which my grandparents bought her when she was 10 years old, with money they didn't have. Needless to say, it means a lot her, and it has come to mean a lot to me, too. But anyway, my cousin Zach started to teach me guitar, but after about six months of nothing new, I started to lose interest. My dad gave me his old Guild s-100 this time last year. That really started my interest in music. From there I started broadening my music interests. It was Jimi Hendrix that really got me. His style of playing, hard rock with jazz, blues, and plenty of voodoo mixed in just hit me like a tidal wave. From there I tried to get a band together, and thats where I found Evan. We started the band, and after going through a few drummers (I hate to admit it, but I hadn't heard any of them drum before I let them in) and a few synthesizers (the first of which was Josh, who was quickly moved to guitar) we decided on myself, Evan, Josh, and Zane. A little later we added Cain to the lineup. (He's the only other band member I've heard any form of song from, although Evan has a few bass lines.) This band has gone from a few kids I barely knew, with the only thing in common (being) our interest in music to a family. Well, that about sums it up for now. I'll add to this regularly."
Evan -- Bass and Lead Vocal ...
Evan's Description of the Beginnings of the BORED
My band career (LOL, band career) all started last year. We were all at lunch, when Noah just randomly said, "Do you listen to Jimi Hendrix?"Shortly after, I bought myself a Fender bass and learned some of the most simple riffs (example: "Smoke on the Water").
I then had lessons and slowly got better and better. That was when Josh decided to buy a guitar, and we had a big band -- almost like a family
Cain -- Keyboards
He also performs as Guitarist with the Crosby, Nash, Stills & Young Material
Keyboardist Keeps Kwiet ... so far, anyway :) Josh -- Rhythm Guitar ...
I'm gonna make him write this, LOL
I'll keep working on it ;)
Zane on the Drums ...
He's shy and quiet, but we'll get it out of him :)
Well, Zane doesn't talk a whole lot, either ... I can see this could take some more time.I do know for a fact, however (I have sources) that Zane got new drums for Christmas!!!
Maybe we can get him to brag about that a little bit ;)
