To Everyone Born in 1964......

I started this lens because I was born in 1964 and I often try to remember what life was like then. What were the key events, who was famous, what movies, what music what fashions were people crazy about then. In pulling this information together I am reaching out to other people who were born in this fantastic year, who are now 45 or 46 years old, and who are also experiencing the joys and challenges of raising families, trying to understand world events and reflecting on "how things used to be". Who were your heroes? What are your memories? I'd love to hear your comments and experiences. Let's make this a really rich source of information for the other 750 million or so special people who were born in 1964. How many of them do you know? How many of them do you stay in touch with? Visit this site to remember, to listen to music, to escape, and to ask "what if". Let's make this our special place!

Anyone born in 1964 will only have at best a vague recollection of the sixties. Most formative memories will have actually occurred in the seventies when sixties babies were 10-20 years old. The seventies is often referred to as the forgotten decade and yet some of the most popular music and fashions are among the most memorable and influential of the last 50 years. Where would we be without the flared trousers, platform shoes, disco, punk, big collars, kipper ties, hotpants, mini, midi and maxi skirts, long boots, sheepskin coats and large afro hairstyles that are once again popular (well maybe not the platform shoes!) So a part of this site has been dedicated to the seventies which I know you - like me - will look back on with great fondness.

As well as giving this brief review of the seventies at the bottom of this site we are currently constructing a full site dedicated exclusively to the seventies which will link from this site. Scroll down or take a short-cut from the contents section.

1964 - Last Year of the Baby Boom

The Baby Boom began in 1946 and ended in 1964. So if you were born in 1964 your were one of the last of the famous Baby Boomers. It all started with men returning from the second world war. As they began to build families the number of babies born in this period literally exploded. This generation's childhood and teenage memories are filled with the Vietnam War, J F Kennedy, the cold war, civil rights, rock music, hippies, rock 'n roll, Elvis Presley, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who and Bob Dylan. This coincided with major changes in social behavior. Not surprisingly, there is currently less resistance among baby boomers to marijuana usage (currently in their 40s and 50s) than in younger generations.

Many baby boomers are experiencing or have experienced busy family life and many are now returning to interesting second careers, hobbies such as art, and other leisure activities. As one of the wealthiest generations that has ever existed, they have had their fill of consumerism and fully understand that although money can bring great comforts, it does not always bring happiness. Many are now left wondering how they can correct the "money-is-no-object attitudes that are now prevalent in their children. To many younger baby boomers the world recession in the last 2 years has brought with it the realization that retirement may no longer offer the financial security that has been assumed. They are also realizing that the next generation (our kids) may have to reset expectations as they prepare to pay for the extravagance of their parents. How do we break it to them?

I was born in the sixties (1966), but I was too little to really know much about it. For that reason, I'd say the seventies were better! Besides, 70s music is incredible!!
