Boston Terriers - "The American Gentlemen" Amongst Dogs

Ranked #11,495 in Pets & Animals, #297,576 overall

Why Do Boston Terrier Owners Love Their Dogs?

Boston Terriers, which grow to be about 10-25 pounds, are also known as the Boston Bull.  They're a sturdy little dog, with a muscular build.  Owners who treasure their short-haired Boston Terrier adore the short, wide face with large, round eyes and tiny ears.

Originally a fighting dog breed, the Boston Terrier has evolved into a gentle, loveable dog without aggression.  In fact, its reputation of being well-mannered earned it the moniker of "The American Gentlemen" Amongst Dogs.

The well-mannered part only comes with proper training, because a Boston Terrier left untrained can be overly rambunctious. Many times, just a simple change in the tone of your voice will be enough to get your Boston Terrier to behave properly.

The great thing about owning a Boston Terrier is that they're eager and willing to learn from you, and their level of intelligence helps the process move faster so that they're fully trained in a shorter period of time.

The perfect owner for a Boston Terrier is someone who is either seeking a protective dog who will bark when necessary, or a pet who will be playful and friendly with children and strangers that you introduce it to.

They love to be part of the family, not left alone all day.  They're very popular in the United States, ranked at the 15th most popular breed - possibly due to the fact the Boston Terriers are one of the few dog breeds developed in the States!

What Kind of Environment Does a Boston Terrier Need?

A Boston Terrier is a small dog breed, but that doesn't mean it can thrive in a cramped space. They love to be active and play, so they need room to run around.

Still, when they're indoors, they stay pretty inactive, so an apartment is fine as long as they're allowed to go for walks with you!

Weather is an issue for the Boston Terrier breed, and extremes of hot or cold can be difficult for them. This breed loves to play, but can suffer exhaustion if they're in a weather extreme and play too hard and long.

When taken care of properly, a Boston Terrier can live up to 15 years or longer. Some health problems can include heart and skin tumors, eye injuries, snoring and drooling. When the mother dog has a litter of pups, there are usually 3-4 puppies born, but many times a Caesarean is necessary because of the large heads on the dogs.

When you're caring for your Boston Terrier, you want to make sure it's able to get plenty of exercise and that you maintain a frequent grooming schedule. Their coats are short and smooth, so matting isn't a problem.

A simple comb and brush after a bath once in awhile is all you need to keep them looking sleek and keep shedding to a minimum. Instead of a full-length bath, a wipe-down with a face cloth is all you need to do to get rid of debris from outside around the eyes and ears.

How Do I Train My Boston Terrier?

Boston Terriers want so badly to be the perfect pet for you. They may not have inherent manners, but they're a very teachable dog breed, making training a snap! Training is necessary for this type of dog because, left untrained, they can be uncontrollable.

Having a Boston Terrier puppy in your house means you'll be subject to barking, potty training issues, and an aggressive, yet playful nature that needs to be curbed somewhat. Jumping on people can also be an issue that you'll want to address.

When you start reading about how to train your Boston Terrier, you'll discover that you don't have to beat or berate your dog into obeying your commands. Since they crave learning new things, your Boston Terrier will be onboard without harmful training techniques.

Instead, you can adopt a positive training method that takes your dog's nature into account instead of providing you with a "one-size fits all" approach to training your new pet.

Aside from addressing necessary bad habits like digging, jumping, chewing, barking, and potty training, you can learn how to get your Boston Terrier to obey simple commands like "sit, stay, come, and heel."

I've always thought of myself as a big dog owner, but I can see that a smaller dog might be a better fit.
