"It's definitely BU for me, personally. We have just a huge rivalry against them. We have a separate part in our locker room called "The Dog Pound." Every time we beat them, we put a puck up there."
USCHO profile
3/20/05 profile:

"Brian is a good athlete, he was a pitcher in high school and of course a very good hockey player," Eagles coach Jerry York said. "The jump for any player from the prep school level to Hockey East is huge. Big kids like Brian, it takes them longer. You have to be a little patient with them, but at some point you've got to challenge the player. 'Hey, you're just treading water. We want you to be much, much better in specific areas.'
"We thought his intensity level on the ice had to improve. His skills have always been good. He's a much more powerful player. He's using his 6-foot-7, 235 pounds. Sometimes, during his freshman year, I thought he was 5-7, 150 pounds. He was playing a cute little game, but he's become a man now."

11/14/05 following win against Vermont. Great compliment from York:
''You could walk into a rink and you knew right away he was going to be a terrific player," said BC coach Jerry York, who recruited Gerbe from the US National Development Program. ''It didn't take a lot for me to see his skating and his creativeness. He's an awful lot like the Brian Giontas and some of the other players that we've had."

USA Hockey

Dated 4/19/05.

"I can't be scared being 5-5," Gerbe said following a U.S. Under-18 team exhibition match against a college opponent. "This is what I've got. I know how I've got to play to make it. I'm going to go out there and throw my body around, take hits and make plays. I have to have a mean streak being this size. Have to."
US Hockey Report
10/12/03 -
Then, pretty much out of the blue, he announced to a surprised NTDP staff that he saw his future at BC, and wished to play there. U.S. Under-17 coach David Quinn put in a call to BC assistant Mike Cavanaugh -- and the rest is history, or will be in a couple of years, when Gerbe arrives at the Heights in the fall of 2005.

BC Athletics feature
12/2/04: I don't think you can really look forward to any one thing. You come to BC to win. That's why you come here. It's a great school that has unbelievable athletics, and you want to win. The reason BC wins is because they take one game at a time. If you sit here at the beginning of the season saying, `Let's win the Beanpot,' or, `Let's get to the Frozen Four,' you are not going to get very far. If you think an opponent isn't that strong, you are going to lose. You need to take every game as seriously as the next. I can't say that I'm looking forward more to the Beanpot or the Frozen Four, even though that is our goal.

Post-draft interview.

...Q: What do you know about the Vancouver Canucks and where do you see yourself fitting in over the next few years?

I don't know too much about them. They've done very well over the past few years, so I know that they are a very good organization. I've heard a lot of great things about the city itself and I've also heard they were looking for a goalie and hopefully that I'll be able to fill that void. I know they have had a tough time establishing a number one guy, but I'm confident that in a couple of years I'll be able to do that. ...

Hopefully by "couple" he meant "four".

About Melissa_Wade

Hockey fan - Hockey Photographer.

Originally an NHL fan - New Jersey Devils specifically (season ticket holder). Started on the path of being a college (and Boston College) fan when I went to the 1999 Beanpot to see sophomore Devil prospects Brian Gionta and Scott Clemmensen play (well, Clem didn't so they lost). Was lucky enough to have my first Frozen Four be 2001 when BC won the national championship.

Picked up my first non P&S camera when a former employer asked me to figure out an SLR we needed at work. Took it to Devils' training camp the next day to try it out and was hooked on shooting hockey. Ended up going digital with the Sony Mavica FD-91 (this is pre-megapixel - files were saved onto floppy disks), later moving up to the Canon EOS-1D with a consumer lens and then adding the Mark II and some L glass.
