First of all, let me start by saying I have been lifting weights for 50 years, with the vast majority of it in health clubs, - all the while believing working out at home was only for people not serious about getting in shape.

 
Let's get something straight.  I always prided myself on being able to determine the most effective course of action to achieve the best results for myself.

 
"How did I start believing working out at home was not serious…"

 
It all started in my senior year in high school, when I got a used set of dumbbells and a barbell with a few plates.

 So what happened?

I started working out in a spare bedroom at home.  I turned up the music really loud and followed a routine. 

 I quickly realized I didn't have enough of a variety of plates to be able to achieve a complete effective workout.

There wasn't enough room for all the plates that I would need, and the thought of constantly changing even more plates was depressing.

And on top of that, it became tedious and time wasting to constantly change the few plates I did have.

I stopped looking forward to the next workout.  It got old fast. It became frustrating.  And I stopped working out for a while.

After working out in the high school and college weight rooms I joined gyms and health clubs. 

"What eventually happened at the health clubs that began to discourage me" 

Like me, you have probably spent many hours working out in a health club, so you have more than likely encountered many or all of the following experiences:
 

1.  Too much driving time.

 
2.  Too crowded during prime busy times, which may be the only time you have available.

 

3.  Excessive waiting for a machine or the correct dumbbell or barbell weight.

 

 4.  Doing a set that is not part of your planned routine just because it is available and you do not have to wait to do it.

 

5.  The gym or health club did not always feel "clean enough" and those towels you carried around to wipe off the equipment only served to remind you the whole thing was not that sanitary!

 
 6.  Other people distracted you.

 

 7.  The choice of music annoyed you and its loudness became unpleasant.  Ear phones did not help enough.

 

 8.  You went less and less frequently as you found it more difficult to block out the large amount of time required.

 

 9.  Your consistency began to diminish and you became annoyed at not being able to achieve your fitness goals.

 
10.  The large amount of time away from your family, friends, social life and time at home for other activities all began to either diminish the frequency of your workouts or created problems in the rest of your life.

11.  Going to the health club became too stressful.

To be honest with you, at this point my frustration level was extremely high.   I noticed I did not have that high - energy feeling from being in shape any more.  I was forcing myself to go to the health club only when I couldn't stand it anymore.

The Bowflex® dumbbell breakthrough! 

This is how it happened for me. 

One day I received in the mail an advertisement for Bowflex® dumbbells.
