A taxidermist would take a pre-mounted fish, make a fish cast directly off the skin mount giving you a fiberglass fish reproduction or graphite replica with minimal detail and realism. Taxidermy is a process that has been practiced for hundreds of years. Fish replicas are relatively new in comparison so it only made sense when replicating a fish you would simply use a mounted fish as your prototype. Most fiberglass resins being processed are extremely moisture sensitive making it almost impossible to generate a fish replica directly off a fresh fish.
