Boxer Breed Information on Health, Temperatment, and Description
Boxer Breed Information History
The Boxer originated in Germany in the early 1800's. Bred with mastiff-type dogs and terriers, the Boxer can be fearless, agile, and highly energetic. At first, they were used in bull-baiting which has thankfully been outlawed. Then the Boxers began to be used by butchers in Germany in order to control the cattle waiting for slaughter. When the Germans first began using dogs in the military and for the police, the Boxer was the dog of choice.
Boxer Breed Information Temperament
If you want a playful and active dog, the Boxer is for you. Boxers can also be described as enthusiastic and energetic, eager and outgoing. They are a loyal and affectionate dog with an inspiring zest for life. Lots of daily exercise is required for the Boxer. It's good to have a big yard and time for play, but beware that sometimes Boxers do not do well in hot weather. Boxers can make good watchdogs. They may be aggressive towards strange dogs but they generally get along well with other family pets. When it comes to training the Boxer can be stubborn and sometimes even overly sensitive. Positive reinforcement and patience is recommended for training. Once trained, Boxers respond well to commands.
Boxer Breed Information Description
The coat of a Boxer is short and beautiful in color. The coat color is generally either fawn or bridle. Sometimes the color is accompanied by white on the chest, feet, and tail and a black mask around the eyes and on the muzzle. The average height of the Boxer is 21-25 inches tall. The average weight is 50-80 pounds. The ears are generally cropped to a taper and their tails are usually docked. Boxers have a broad muzzle and an undershot bite.
Boxer Breed Information Health
Genetic health issues with Boxers include heart problems, hip dysplasia, tumors, and gastric torsion. In hip dysplasia, the head of the femur bone does not fit well in the pelvic socket. Sometimes hip dysplasia is mild, but for an active dog like the Boxer, the problem can get worse and even painful if left untreated. In gastric torsion, the stomach twists and traps food or gases. If left untreated, this issue can be deadly.
