I have learned this lesson well. When I was first diagnosed as diabetic, I felt that I really did not need an ID bracelet. My condition worsened to the point that I was placed into dialysis. My health care professionals insisted that I get a bracelet. So, I got the cheapest bracelet I could find. It looked cheap and did not stand up well at all. In a couple months I was without one. Later I received a kidney transplant and really began to re-evaluate my health habits. My health has been improving although I have a long ways to go. I now have a great passion to learn as much about diabetes as I can. I have opened a web site to help and share with fellow diabetics (www.KnowingDiabetes.com ).
Also, I purchased a far better quality gold medical id bracelet and began to wear it ALL the time. A couple years ago, during a time of great stress, I fell into a diabetic coma. 911 was called and the first thing the paramedics checked was my bracelet. I could not speak; they could not even wake me, but my bracelet told them my name, address, doctor, diabetes, high blood pressure preferred hospital and the contact info of the transplant team. The point is that a simple bracelet could save your family member's life.
