Brazilian Portuguese: A Daughter Surpassing Its Mother

The rise of Brazilian Portuguese is similar to that of Latin American Spanish and Iberian Spanish. Brazilian Portuguese is derived from Continental Portuguese but has long since surpassed its "mother" tongue in terms of sheer numbers.

Portuguese is a member of the family of Indo-European languages.

Over 200 million people speak Portuguese throughout the world today and more than 172 million of these reside in Brazil.

Apart from Portugal and Brazil, Portuguese is also the official language of seven countries. There are some variations in the pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary between the countries.
