Breast Cancer in Women Under 40 October Drive

For breast cancer awareness month our company, 247 Jewelry Shop, is supporting a charity called the Young Survival Coalition, through eBay Givingworks. This organization prides itself on being the only international non-profit group dedicated solely to promoting breast cancer awareness in women under 40. As a company, we believe that breast cancer is a serious issue which needs to be addressed. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in women under 40. In fact, most health insurance companies do not provide funding for women under 40, even if they run a high risk of having this disease (for example, if the disease runs in their family.) The YSC is working towards making it possible for younger women to have the option of testing in hopes of catching the disease at an early stage. Along with helping fight for the rights of young women, they also work as a resource for young women who have cancer: they provide support and connections to other young women with the disease.

Why support Young Survival Coalition? As a company made up entirely of women under the age of 40, we believe that this neglect of young women is an important issue and it does not receive the attention that it deserves. By supporting this charity, we are helping to fund medical research specifically geared towards young women such as ourselves; we want all women, regardless of age, to have the opportunity to be tested for breast cancer. While breast cancer is in fact most commonly found in women over 40, that does not necessarily mean women under the age of 40 cannot get this disease. Cancer in young women is typically worse in condition and has a much lower survival rate than their older counterparts. In fact in 2000, there are over 250,000 women in the United States who were age 40 or under when they were diagnosed with breast cancer (based on the 2000 US Census). We are working to help this charity spread their knowledge as well as support an underrepresented portion of the world's population.
