Brenda Ladun: She Is Surviving Breast Cancer One Day At a Time!

Brenda Ladun is one the 6pm/10pm news Anchors on the ABC TV affiliate in Birmingham, Alabama. That is how I first "met" her. I watched her grow as a newscaster over the years, then I watched her cope with breast cancer - twice. I thought she was such a brave person to keep working while she was battling her disease. Some days she looked wonderful. Other days, she just plainly looked tired. But she kept on keeping on. Let me remind you, she did this twice.

Then I heard her on The Rick and Bubba Show--a radio show that is produced in Birmingham, AL. Now she is my Superhero. In a field that is really fickle and superficial (TV aka "Entertainment"), Ms. Ladun made a point by staying on the air. She was showing us ALL that one can cope with cancer. One CAN keep coping with cancer with God's help. Channel 33/40 also impressed me with their support of Ms. Ladun.

Every year, Ms. Ladun gives her name and time to a Conquer Cancer Run . In 2012 the run will be on March 3rd.

PS--Kudos to WABC 33/40 for allowing her to keep reporting the news while she endured chemotherapy and sharing her life! Click here for an easy and free way to help fund mammograms for those in need at The Breast Cancer Site!

Brenda's Short Bio

From Birmingham Wiki (link at end of article)

Brenda Ladun is an evening news anchor for ABC 33/40.

Ladun grew up in Pennsylvania where she had an opportunity to learn about broadcast journalism for her school's closed-circuit television station. She graduated from the University of South Florida with a bachelor's in mass communications. She met her husband, sportscaster Doug Bell while working at a television station in Gainesville. The couple moved to Peoria, Illinois for five years before coming to Birmingham. Ladun worked at WBRC 6 from 1987 to 1996 before joining the staff at ABC 33/40.

Ladun is a five-time winner of the Alabama Associated Press Awards for Best Investigative Reporter and Best Specialized Reporter. She has also won for Best Anchor.

In 2001 Ladun was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had a double mastectomy and underwent chemotherapy. During her recovery she took up running and has competed in several marathons. In 2007, after a period of apparent remission, the cancer returned. Ladun points to her faith as the foundation of her strength to fight the disease. She is a regional spokeswoman for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and has written two books about her recovery. For a special series she aired about breast cancer she was given the Edward R. Murrow Award for Radio and Television Journalism.

Bell and Ladun have three sons, Brooks, Gabby and Garett. She is an active supporter of the Grace House Christian Home for Girls and teaches Sunday school at Hunter Street Baptist Church.

Playing Tennis For The Cure

The following information was taken from the Sugan G. Komen for the Cure website (no longer an active website, unfortunately). However, here is another Tennis for the Cure website for you.

Ms. Ladun has been an honorary chairperson.

TENNIS FOR THE CUREĀ® united tennis players from the entire greater Birmingham area in a fun friendly tennis league. Players played a 5 match season over six weeks and had a chance to compete in a city championship playoff. The league used flexible scheduling format that allows players to schedule their own matches at convenient times. There were leagues for women, men, and juniors and all different ability levels.
