Brezje and Pope John Paul II

This popular pilgrim destination with the painting of Mary inside the chapel became way too small in 1889. Many prayers in front of "Slovenian Queen" Mary's painting were answered since 1863 and more and more pilgrims were coming to Brezje - from everywhere.

That's when the expansion of the church became crucial. The building was then rebuilt to today's size and image, and consecrated in 1900.

In 1988 this church received a praising title "basilica" from Pope John Paul II and he visited Brezje in 1996.

Throughout the holly year of 2000, full indulgences were given in basilica of St. Vid, Brezje.
