Etsy- the place to shop for handmade, vintage or supplies!

Etsy was started in 2005. While it is primarily known as a site for handmade items (virtually anything and everything imaginable), it also has a large category of vintage items, and a supply category. People from around the globe sell on Etsy. And virtually anyone can set up a shop on Etsy.

In 2008 there were over 120,000 shops from 127 countries. In May of 2010 there are over twice that many shops. This year, 2010, the administration says there are shops from over 200 countries! And in 2009 Quantcast says over 2,2 million people visited Etsy monthly from the USA alone. In September of 2011 480,027 people joined Etsy. There are over 346,825 shops listed. And the page views for the month were 1.14 billion. With over 11,000,000 users Etsy is clearly growing.

This huge growth has caused problems- being found on Etsy is definitely a challenge. The search is constantly broken. The site is quirky, and has glitches: email issues, page loading problems, and picture loading problems are not uncommon. And this year the syndication of shops to Google Merchant has been a slow roll out, with newer shops still not being included.

It used to be that Etsy, though a selling platform, was very much a social site. There was interaction of all kinds. There were teams for different countries, and teams for different states. There were teams for different crafts. There are virtual labs, chat rooms, and the forums. Etsy really was built around the idea of being a community. People were there to help one another through problems. Whether a person was not selling much, or whether a family was not supportive of a person's craft, other Etsians were there for you.

This year, 2011 saw many changes. While some of the above is true, much has changed. The old forums were broken up. Now there are teams for interaction... and there are literally hundreds of teams. But, the old forums were the heart and soul for many, and the new forums are strictly for business. There were mutings in the forums... where a person was permanently banned from them, some felt aribtrarily by the administration. This year also saw privacy issues, causing the feedback system to change, so one no longer saw all pertinate feedback comments. Other change was Etsy changed from a selling site, to a social site, thereby limiting some people to be able to use it at work. And there were circles added, favorites moved from one spot to another, and other things to help people inter-act. Every changed caused turmoil, and was another thing to try to figure out.

But, most people who sell on Etsy love it. They are surrounded by people just like themselves, trying to do something they want to do. Whether they are just trying out selling their craft items for the first time, as stay at home moms; or whether they are seasoned sellers who wholesale to large stores, Etsy has given them a venue, filled with people who understand each other. For many it has been a jumping off point for selling. And they are loyal to it.
