Introducing British Whale

Justin Hawkins previously of The Darkness has signed a publishing deal with Warner/Chappell Music that covers his solo work outside of the band.

Justin's first solo album which goes by the artist name British Whale and has been the subject of much rumour, has in fact been completed and will be released at a future date yet to be confirmed. The album was recorded, produced and performed entirely by Justin and has been a labour of love some 3 years in the making due to the time needed to break The Darkness worldwide.

The first solo single by Justin is a cover of Sparks' 'This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us' which was released by Atlantic Records on August 15th 2006.

Feel free to take a look around my lens and please don't forget to rate it.

2nd Single

In May 2006, British Whale released their second single, an unofficial World Cup anthem entitled "England". It features a chorus of 'England's to the tune of the German national anthem as well as lyrical references to World War II Prime Minister Winston Churchill's wartime speeches. Some see his deliberate mentioning of the war to be controversial, though accusations of "Hun Bashing", are works of invention[citation needed] from The Sun. Rather, the song is intended as an ironic comment on so-called 'political correctness gone mad' and the accusations of nationalism that are aimed at those who support their national football team.

Plans are afoot to release an album of already recorded material in the summer of 2006. Titles considered for the album included Pretentious, Moi? or Wurst Case Scenario, though Hawkins has since revealed in an interview with MTV Germany that he intends to call the album Snatching Defeat From The Jaws Of Victory.

However, after leaving the The Darkness in early October 2006 it is unknown when Justin will continue his solo career. It is thought that his solo album will still be released in the future.

New Text / Write module

More information on Justin's solo work is available at BritishWhale.com.

Richard Manners, MD of Warner/Chappell, said: "Justin is a true maverick genius and his solo work is completely inspired. I am delighted to be working with him."

Justin commented: "The majority of this solo album was actually recorded prior to Permission To Land by The Darkness. I've been dying to work with Richard Manners who has been brilliantly supportive in my battle to get this stuff released."

Julie commented: "Fantastic stuff, much more personal than work with The Darkness, really stretched his voice and showed the incredible range which scared Bono from U2 so much on the Last Charity single they appeared in, that he rushed over to London by plane to re-record his pitiful warbling."
