Brooke Hanson - Australian Swimmer

Australian swimmer and television personality Brooke Hanson has one of the most amazing stories to tell in the history of the Olympics.  In 1996, Hanson missed the Olympic team in the 100m breaststroke by 0.11 seconds and then in 2000 she missed the Sydney Olympic team by 0.80 second.  Still determined to become an Olympian Brooke Hanson trained on for another four years and after winning 3 gold at the 2004 Olympic Selection Trials was selected in her first Olympic team at the age of 26 years.

Brooke went on to win silver in the 100m breaststroke in Athens and was a member of the 4 x 100 Medley relay team that won gold, swimming the breaststroke leg in the preliminaries.

Following the Olympics, Brooke represented Australia at the 2004 World Short Course Championships at Indianapolis.  At the Championships she joined a selected few of the great swimmers of all time by winning six gold medals.  The only other swimmers to have won 6 gold at a major international championships are Kristen Otto, Mark Spitz, Ian Thorpe and Michael Phelps.

Brooke Hanson's Book - When Silver is Gold

Media Release New Holland Publishers
July 1 2008
Honest, sometimes controversial and inspiring - Brooke details how she nearly drowned twice as a toddler, and takes the reader through to the regime of Olympic training.

She tells of the scandals in the sport where "baseless lies" almost cost careers, that famous Medley muddle, drugs in sport, almost being electrocuted in a promotion - winning and losing - and why she eventually called it quits. There is also personal heartache, including have to deal with her father's heart attack.

She provides an insider's view into Olympic preparation - and finding love!

Brooke has also been made an ambassador for the Smith Family's "Little Learners' Literacy Fund".

The fund is run through Borders stores nationally and helps provide scholarships and resources to encourage children to read.
