The Chronicles of Brother Cadfael by Ellis Peters

Ranked #6,473 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #225,819 overall

One of the Best-Written Mysteries Series ever

I've been a fan of Brother Cadfael and Ellis Peters (the author) since I read the first book of the series.  Well-written, well researched, plots well thought out and come out of the medieval background, and have a balance of action, meditative monks and young love in each book.  There is also the political background of the series where it is set against the real history of the times.  There are also characters who grow and change from book to book.

Ellis Peters is the pseudonom of Edith Pargeter an English author. She lived from 1913-1995 and wrote many books besides the Brother Cadfael series.

An Excellent Background Book

I own a copy of this. It's a beautiful book with quotes from the stories, photos of the herbs, notes on the herbs themselves. There's also photos of rural England and chapters on the background of herbal uses and knowledge as well as background on the monastic garden.
