Meet My Alter Ego

Bru is a persona I have created for living and working in a virtual world known as Second Life.  It may seem strange to some, but since I do art and music and am otherwise creative in "real life", putting on another costume and character is not so strange.  The "real" me is basically a blank canvas on which to put various masks, anyway.  And - in all honesty - "Bru" is oftentimes a truer expression of my real self.

Unlike some in Second Life, I don't adopt a totally different persona to go with my totally different appearance. I play myself with a younger and much more beautiful "costume". That is the real hook of Second Life for me - getting to look like a model and wear rock star clothes when in real life I'm approaching 50 and live in a small midwestern town where people frown on anything too flashy or sexy.

So, in that way, Bru is a chance to explore some things that can't be done in real life, at least not with the same immediacy, if at all.  She has been a lot about playing dress up and doll house.   She's another vehicle for me to express myself with imagery and interactive conversation - a sort of virtual 3-D art journal.

Second Life Fashion

Fashion is alive and well and affordable in Second Life. I can have gowns there I will never be able to afford (or have a place to wear) in real life. But there is a lot of other cool fashion, too. Check out my lens about it.

Dusty's Rock 'n Country Lounge and Mall

Dusty's has been in the top twenty most popular places in Second life, and was the #1 Country music club in SL for quite some time before its closing on April 1st, 2007.

While working as a hostess there I met Rick, my former SL partner and owner of Dusty's. I was made part owner of the club (in name only and not financially, thank goodness).

Dusty's resurfaced for a while in late 2007 and 2008 and then demateralized into thin air overnight, as did the partnership. This kind of disappearing act is a VERY common occurrence among businesses and relationships in Second Life.

Books About Second Life

A guide book or two wouldn't hurt...

Things are constantly evolving in Second Life, but the basics remain the same. These books, published in late 2007, shouldn't be too out of date yet. It wouldn't hurt to study a bit when you're not in world. It's a complex place.

When I first made this lens, no books were available. :)

Very interesting to hear about your experiences. I haven't been into SL for quite a while. As you know, I was exploring the education side of it but I think you hit on something here -- a lot of the appeal for a number of the female students and staff too lay in the creativity of the place and the whole 'dressing up'. I think that too is why many men seem to dislike it, as they are generally not into that side of things. At least not the ones I have known. :)

I've never played anything like that. I don't seem to have enough time. I would probably become addicted to it. I love Roller Coaster Tycoon. There are times I will play it and six hours have gone by. Because of this, I rarely play it.
