Martial Arts Movies - Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan Changed Them For Better

I watched my first Bruce Lee movie when I was perhaps 8 or 9 years old -- and that experience helped me to decide to study martial arts. In my town in New Mexico, the only martial arts classes that we knew about happened to be that for Gojyu-Ryu Okinawan-style karate.

Our sensei (instructor) had studied Gojyu-Ryu karate based on the teachings of the master sensei Mas Oyama, a noted Korean-ancestry karate-ka of Japan. After studying for two years, our sensei migrated our style from Gojyu-Ryu to Tae Kwon Do--the more Korean-oriented form of the karate martial art.

During my early study years in the martial arts, I had more chances to see Bruce Lee films -- and enjoyed all of them.

Then, later, when I was in college, we would frequently watch Chinese kung-fu movies on Fridays at the student center. These experiences would get my urge for further practice in martial arts going.

One thing I hadn't noticed or realized when I was watching the Bruce Lee and other Chinese kung-fu movies was that some of the "understudies" or "extras" in the Bruce Lee movies would go on to gather a following for their own stardom in martial arts films. And one of those "understudies" was the young Jackie Chan.

The Techniques and Plots in Martial Arts Films

Jackie Chan Brought Unique Plots and Quality to Martial Arts Films!

Jackie Chan Brought Unique Plots and Quality to Martial Arts Films!Almost 40 years after first taking Gojyu-Ryu and Tae Kwon Do, my two kids were inspired to study martial arts--and maybe this was because they enjoyed watching Jackie Chan movies almost as much as their dear old dad. Yup, I was an instant fan of Jackie Chan movies.

What Jackie Chan brought to his movies was more believable plots (in a strange sort of way) and those involving current events and concerns. He also brought a slapstick comedy technique to his martial arts--some that were started with more subtlety by Bruce Lee.

Chackie Chan used many of the techniques first demonstrated by Bruce Lee in his movies and then improved upon them. He also did his own stunts, which occasionally put him in the hospital because many of the stunts were quite dangerous.
