Bual - the medium sweet Madeira

Ranked #6,487 in Food & Cooking, #120,209 overall

About Bual

Bual, also called Boal, is one of the four noble varieities of Madeira. One of the sweeter versions, next to the sweetest, Malmsey, it is a popular drink.

As with all Madeiras it is produced on the Portuguese island Madeira, and named after the grape type used to produce it. Widely used in cooking, and a favourite of several American presidents, Madeira is traditionally a desert drink.

This lens covers details of the Bual type of the fortified wine.

About Madeira

The Fortified wine

Madeira is a forified wine, like Port or Sherry. This means that during fermentation, brandy is added to increase the alcohol content. Unlike other Fortified wines, Madeira is heated during fermentation, which gives it its unique flavour. It also survives conditions which other wines do not, and can be drinkable for months after it is opened.

Despite being the drink in which the Declaration of Independence was traditionally toasted, and a favourite of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, Madeira is not well known in the US today. It has wider support in the international community.

Bual Madeira on eBay

Buy Bual Madeira online

eBay has very strict rules about the sale of wine, and sellers must be pre-approved. One of the few places I have found where you can purchase Madeira online in the US is borisalwine, a New York store.

Remember, the drinking age varies state to state, and they will not sell to underage customers or those suspected of being underage. Check the FAQ on each listing for details.

International Sellers

Madeira vintages and more

There are a number of suppliers of Madeiras overseas who will ship internationally. They are included here as they have a better range than the US suppliers I have found, includng some rare vintages.

The Drinkshop offers a range of Madeira, from the lower end designed for cooking, up to the higher end vintages.

In Europe, a cheaper range of cookuing madeiras, made from Tinta negra mole rather than official madeira grapes, can be bought from Oddbins.

Rare Madeira
Companies like Berry Brothers and Rudd in London (See their Bual Page), Fortnum and Mason and several other shops offer extensive ranges. If you can't get there, then you could try ordering online (they ship internationally) or
who offer a range of rare wines.

Madeira refortified
By Jancis Robinson Every now and then I am asked what my desert island wine would be. The answer is, coincidentally, very much an island drink, the eponymous wine of the volcanic Atlantic archipelago of Madeira. This is partly because I think fine ...
Vintage $350 Madeira Beats Pricey Burgundy, Champagne
By John Mariani on May 20, 2012 It isn't every day that wine writers get to taste Madeiras from 1910 and 1912 over lunch, but I had a chance to taste those two old-timers in an array that also included examples ranging from a 1920 to a pubescent 1996.
Food & Wine Matching can be Fun
A 15-year-old Bual was too acid, but the Blandy's ten-year-old Malmsey was very good. So there were the answers for my Peking Duck and its challenging sauce, this old and rare Recioto della Valpolicella, or a ten-year-old Malmsey Madeira (which has the ...
Jersey Royals
I rated this as a very good wine with vibrancy, finesse and delicacy, but it just lacked a touch of intensity of botrytis character to be outstanding. Last, and certainly not least, was Bual 1900 from de Souza. This Madeira was a truly sumptuous wine!
