Buddleia Bushes

Buddleia, also often spelled Buddleja, is a genus of flowering plants. It is now included in the Scrophulariaceae, though in the past was previously classified in either the Loganiaceae or in a family of its own, the Buddlejaceae. The plant was named after the Reverend Adam Buddle who was a botanist and a rector in Essex, England.

Buddleia 'Blue Chip'

Zones 5-9

Less than 2 Feet Tall and WideBlooms continuously (rather than in waves) and never needs deadheading. The first in the exciting new Lo & Behold? series of miniature Buddleias introduced by the Raulston Arboretum, this mounding, well-branched plant reaches less than 2 feet high and wide, yet flowers continuously (rather than in waves) and never needs deadheading.

It offers an entirely new form for the beloved Butterfly Bush, and is compact enough for ground cover or container use.'Blue Chip' reaches just 20 inches high and wide, yet flowers profusely beginning in early summer (somewhat earlier than many) and continuing without cease into autumn. Unlike most older varieties, 'Blue Chip' sets no seed, so it concentrates all its energy into flowering, and offers no volunteer sprouts or messy debris to collect at season's end. It doesn't even need deadheading.

Like all Butterfly Bushes, 'Blue Chip' thrives in full sunshine - the more the merrier! - and any well-drained soil. Water and feed it well the first year to get its root system established in your garden. Once it feels at home, it's quite forgiving of heat, humidity, poor soil, and even drought! Deer leave it alone, but hummingbirds as well as butterflies are attracted to its sweet, lightly fragrant blossoms. Now you can enjoy the ease and beauty of Buddleia in entirely new garden settings, thanks to 'Blue Chip'.

Buddleia 'Black Knight'

Black Knight Bears Unusual and Showy Color

This cultivar is one of the hardiest of all Buddleias

Buddleias are of course known for their prolific blooms and Black Knight takes it to a higher level. An extra-heavy producer, its blue-black flowers are particularly striking in direct sun. This beauty is also one of the hardiest cultivars of this group. In fact, it has been rated by the Arnold Arboretum as the best Buddleia of all.

One of the most prolific sources of massed color, Buddleias have an exceptionally long blooming period that lasts from summer to early autumn. The long flowers trusses are a seemingly unending supply of cut flowers and garden beauty, and attract butterflies, too.

Plants normally attain 10 to 12 feet in height with similar spread, though we recommend cutting back each year to promote bloom.
