I Started Making Buffalo Chip Fire Starters and Decided I Wanted to Make Candles Instead!

I created my own buffalo chip fire starter and discovered I wanted to make candles
I discovered a new craft one day after I had been making homemade soaps. The mold company where I had been ordering my supplies from had an interesting new mold and all of the ingredients for making homemade fire starters for the campfire or fireplace. It was such a cute idea that I knew would make a unique gift for campers or just anyone who enjoys sitting around the campfire. The history behind buffalo chips is that the cowboys or pioneers would find the dried buffalo chips (the leavings of the buffalo after eating the prairie grasses) and use them to burn in the campfires or use them to start the campfires. My son had the tedious job of cutting hay into 1/2 " strips and putting it into the molds and I would pour the melted, scented, colored wax over the pieces of hay in the mold.
I'm not sure if the company still offers the buffalo chip fire starter kit, but if you are interested you can contact them The info on the label I have is Pourette Mfg.Co. POBox 70469, Seattle, WA. 98107-0469 .

SEARCHING FOR A NEW PROJECT TO LEARN
Learning to make soy candles to give as gifts.
The Buffalo Chip Fire Starter was a good home-school project and it got my son and I started using wax and getting the feel of crafting, but I could no longer find the molds necessary to make them. I only bought 4 molds to try. Now years later I am thinking about making clean burning candles for fun and hopefully profit also. Learning the art of making homemade candles

- We got one of those candle making machines that heats the wax. We melted all the bits of our old candles and made some new ones from them by letting the machine drip into the empty candle jars. I wasn't satisfied with the flimsy wicks that came with the machine. I need to find better ones.

- We've embarked on many candles projects that were more "process" than "product". One of our faves was using blown out eggshells for molds. They didn't burn well because we used inferior materials - but they looked cool! It's nice to know there are ways to make candles at home that actually WORK. Thanks for a great lens!
