Theme Parties

Don't have to be hard! And the delight they bring to your child or class is priceless!

Bug Juice!

bug juice

Bug juice is easy to make and has many variations. Mix a yellow drink (i.e. Squirt or lemonade) with a blue one (kool-aid). You'll end up with a nice buggy shade of green. For fun you may want to add some gummy worm ice cubes. See the picture below!

Buggy Ice Cubes!

Ew... there's a bug in my glass!

wormy ice cubesTake an ice cube tray and place a couple gummy worms in each section. Fill with water and freeze. These cubes make a great addition to Bug Juice, Lemonade or Soda (Squirt, Sprite or 7up).

* You can also replace the water in the ice cubes with bug juice and freeze.

Wormy Cheese Dip

Dig in!

Wormy cheese sticks make the perfect dipper for this Spider dip holder. It is made from a hollowed green pepper and with some green onions for legs. The dip can be store bought or you can supply your own if you prefer. You may also want to have baby carrots and some sliced red peppers on hand for dipping too. Thinly sliced red peppers look a bit like spider legs, and the carrots can be carved with a paring knife to have some ridges which make it look like a grub or caterpillar.

Ladybug Appetizer

This ladybug appetizer is sure to fly off the table in no time. It is a bit more work than the other recipes but well worth it!

2 ounces cream cheese, softened
2 tablespoons sour cream
Black paste food coloring
1/2 teaspoon minced chives
1/8 teaspoon garlic salt
1/8 teaspoon minced fresh parsley
36 butter-flavored crackers
18 cherry tomatoes, quartered
18 large pitted ripe olives
72 fresh chive pieces (about 1-1/2 inches long)
Directions
In a small bowl, beat cream cheese and sour cream until smooth. Remove 1 tablespoon to a small bowl and tint black with food paste coloring. Place tinted cream cheese mixture in a small plastic bag; set aside.
Add the chives, garlic salt and parsley to the remaining cream cheese mixture and spread over the crackers. Arrange two tomato quarters on each cracker for the ladybug wings.
For heads, halve the olives widthwise; place one half on each cracker. Next insert two chives into olives for antennae. Use tinted cream cheese mixture to pipe spots onto wings.

Spiderific Cracker Sandwiches

Ritz crackers, peanut butter and a can of chow mein noodles make for some adorable little spiders. Top off with some raisins for eyes and you're absolutely spiderific! To make the raisins stick, spread a dab of peanut butter on the bottom of the raisin. Don't worry if you don't have chow mein noodles, simply use pretzel pieces instead.

Wormy Mummies

mummy worm hot dogsA package of hot dogs, and a can of crescent rolls is all you need to make these adorable mummy worms. Open a can of crescent rolls and slice into strips. Wrap each hot dog with the dough strips and bake according to the directions on the crescent roll can. After baking, let wormy mummies cool and dot each one with two mustard eyes.

Wormy Hot Dog Sandwiches

1 package (16 ounces) hot dogs
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/2 cup ketchup
1 tablespoon brown sugar
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon spicy brown mustard

Cut each hot dog into eight strips. Then saute hot dogs in oil in a large skillet until golden brown.
Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard and heat through. Serve on buns.

Gummy Worms

It is amazing all the creepy creations you can make from gummy worms!

Dirt and Worms... What could be better?

dirt and wormsA big hit at house is dirt and worms! It is delicious and easy to make. The kids can even help you! When you make this fun recipe be sure to use clear plastic cups so you can see all the muddy fun!-

1 package Oreo cookies, crushed
- 2 cups cold milk
- 1 package chocolate instant pudding mix
- 1 small container Cool Whip topping, thawed
- 1 package gummy worms

Put cookies into a zipper style bag and close tightly. Then give your little ones the job of smashing them. We like to use toy plastic hammers, but rolling pins work well too!
Next mix the milk and pudding in a large bowl, whisking til all is dissolved and the pudding is beginning to set.
Add the Cool Whip and fold into pudding mixture until well blended.
Place a large spoonful of crushed cookies into the bottoms of the plastic cups.
Then add a layer of pudding. Then repeat: layering pudding and crushed Oreos til the cup is full.
Add 1 large gummy worm so that it is half in the cup and 1/2 hanging out of the cup.
Spoon in more crushed cookie around the worm to hold it in place.
Serve chilled.

Buggy Burger Cookies

worm cookie burgersAs with most of the recipes you see on this lens, Buggy Burgers are simple to make. All you need is a box of vanilla wafers, a package of gummy worms and a tub of chocolate frosting! Spread a bit of fudge frosting on a vanilla wafer top with a gummy worm and another wafer and voile!

Squirmy Cupcakes

Just about any cake recipe can become bugtastic by simply adding gummy worms and some crushed Oreos or Chocolate Graham Crackers for dirt. You can use any frosting and cupcake batter you choose. My personal favorite is chocolate cupcakes with fudge frosting.

A Bugtastic Party

is a great way to celebrate a birthday or culminate an invertebrate unit study!
