Direct sunlight can warm the pond more than the fish prefer. Goldfish and Koi prefer a water temperature of 65-75 degrees. Sunlight will also create more algae.Shade- If placed too close too trees the leaves will contaminate the water and the tree roots can destroy your pond.

Concrete- Expensive, but strong. Lime in concrete may have a constant affect on water testing.
Pre-molded liners- Preferred by most people although they can be too small for koi.
