Bulgarian Name Days

Ranked #11,395 in Culture & Society, #228,772 overall

In Bulgaria there is something known as a name day. Bulgarian name days are kind of like a second birthday but only those that have a associated with Eastern Orthodox saints will get one.

The main religion in Bulgaria is Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox Christianity and most people in Bulgaria have a name associated with the saints of Eastern Othordox Christianity so on that Saints day an individual with that Saints name (or variation of) celebrates their name day.

Celebrating a Bulgarian Name Day

Unlike Birthdays where the person whos day it is receives presents, on a Bulgarian name day the festivities are slightly different.

Tradition has it that friends and family of the person enjoying their name day will arrive uninvited to the house of the person whos name day it is. Upon the arrival of friends and family the person whos name day it is has to invite everyone in and treat them all.

In the present day it is not uncommon for the person whos name day it is to invite people to a restaurant and bar where they pay the bill for all those invited.

Below is a list by month of Bulgarian name days.
