Bulgariatravel - A car journey from Sarafovo to Varna

It is always exciting to visit another country, grab a car and explore. Bulgaria is particularly exciting; friendly people, beautiful countryside not yet spoiled,empty roads and the sense of going back into a simpler way of life. This trip I logged a car journey from Sarafovo to Varna.
I've travelled this route before in a different season but once again felt the freedom of the open road in this not yet developed country. Huge forests, rolling unfenced plains, a land that still boasts wild pig, wolves and bears; not many places remaining like this in Europe.
Most visitors miss the resort of Sarafovo,as they arrive by plane at the airport that serves Burgas, ten kilometresaway and are transported away to Sunny Beach without realising that Sarafovo is a mere 5mins away by car. It is a beautiful calm quarter of Burgas, which is the fourth largest city in Bulgaria.
Soon we were passing Pomerie and Nessebar, both seaside towns and heading towards the ever growing resort of Sunny Beach some 25 kilometres from Sarafovo.
Once past the more exclusive Sveti Vlas we started the long climb, through thick forest, winding ever upwards over the Ponoriyski Pass and then dropped down towards the fabulous coastline that embraces the resorts of Obzor and Byala.
Both Obzor and Byala are being transformed from sleepy fishing ports into holiday resorts but not at the same frantic pace that is evident in Sunny Beach.
Travelling on we left the main highway and stopped off at Bliznatsi and Kamchia, a favourite area for many Expats who live in the area.
Soon we arrived in the lovely city of Varna to enjoy it's treelined boulevards, all bedecked with Christmas decorations. The car had got us there but what of the trip back? Read the full account here.
