Butterfly Knives and Balisongs

Why butterfly knives and balisongs? Mostly because they are really cool to watch in the hands of an expert.

Butterfly Knives and Balisongs

The Basics

Butterfly knives, sometimes known as a balisong, is a Philippine folding knife that has two handles. The handles counter rotate around the tang of the knife so that when the knife is closed the blade is concealed within the handles. A expert butterflier can move the manipulate the knife quickly to bring it from a completely closed position to a fully open position quickly. The picture shows an open butterfly knife. Butterfliers manipulate the knives in a wide variety of moves (often called flipping) for fun and amusement.

The Black Widow Butterfly Knife is an extremely well constructed butterfly with a unique shape and style all it's own. Built with flared handles, this tactical look butterfly knife has smooth action. The knife is built with hex construction. This is great. It means you can adjust the tightness of the play on your butterfly to your exact specifications. It also means you should check these hex screws from time to time just to ensure they haven't come loose. The tang has two pins in it which prevent unnecessary banging of the handles. These pins also reduce wear and tear on your butterfly. All around, this unique look butterfly ranks right up there. Well built, smooth action, and it looks fantastic.

How to Use a Butterfly Knife

Butterflying for Beginners

For the beginner, there is a proper place to start. First of all, you need to purchase a knife you like. Typically, this should be a light or a medium weight butterfly knife. The heavy ones should be used only after you have built up your skils. Otherwise, you are going to have very sore knuckles. You can find some really nice knives at BladeOps.com. After you have your knife, it is a good idea, for the first little while, to put some masking, duct, or electrical tape along the sharp edge(s) of the blade. This way, if you mess up, you won't have cut knuckles. I prefer electrical tape because it is less messy and easy to take off.
Then you take your knife in your dominant hand and release the safety (this is normally at the bottom of the handles). Hold the knife gently in your dominant hand between your thumb and your forefinger and middle finger. Put all the digits on only one of the two handles. Slowly "flip" the other handle out. This is just to get used to the weight of the knife. After you can do this fairly well, flip out the handle and spin the handle you are still holding in your hand 180 degrees. Now flip the handle that is loose back towards your hand and catch it between your thumb and two fingers. You shold be holding an open butterfly knife. To close it, you just do all that in reverse.
After you are good at this, practice some other moves. You can find ideas online at youtube or maybe your friends can teach you some.

Have fun and be safe!

Rising Sun Butterfly Knife

Sweet Two-Edged Butterfly

The Rising Sun Butterfly Knife is an amazing two-edged knife. As you can see from the picture, the coloring on the knife goes from red at the end of the handle to black in the middle of the handle and blade and then back to red. This butterfly knife has amazingly smooth action. It has double tang pegs to reduce wear and tear on the handles and it has nearly perfect weight. Here is the trick, this should only be used by a skilled butterfly user. With both edges of the blade sharp, unless you really know what you are doing, you can cut your knuckles up something fierce if you screw up.
But, with that in mind, this is by far my new most favorite butterfly knife on the market. Get one and have some fun.
