Flat buttons are what we commonly use now and has several holes punched through them where the thread is pulled through to attach the button. The advantages of flat buttons are that they can be sewn by hand or machine. And can be used with heavy fabric.

Vintage and Antique buttons can be made of antler, bone, horn, ivory, shell, vegetable ivory, and wood. Modern buttons are usually made of celluloid, glass, bakelite, metal and plastic. The most commonly used is plastic.
