Buying a Car at Auction

Purchasing a car is obviously a big responsibility. However making that choice on where to get the car is a big decision that should be considered properly. There are lots of options on where you are able to get the next vehicle. You may get it from a vehicle lot or perhaps off of a broad auction site like EBay but have you considered specialist internet automobile auctions as a place to get your next used automobile? Automobile auctions have grown to be very popular.

However, there are many things you certainly must evaluate before making such a significant purchase from an auction. Do you think you're getting the best offer your money can buy? What happens in case something goes wrong? These are concerns you need to think of when it comes to your new purchase. Below I'll cover what auto auctions tend to be and how they can either help or perhaps prevent your quest for a brand new auto.

Repossessed Cars - Worth the Risk?

With the problems in the economy lately, it seems that there have been more incidences of automobiles being seized by government agencies and by lending institutions, as well as more advertisements that promote seized or repossessed car auctions. This means that there are also more people than ever who are considering taking advantage of one of these used car auctions to try to get a good deal on their next vehicle.

When people get behind on their car payments, it is common for the lending institution to take back the vehicle, especially if there is no way for the person to get caught up on missed loan payments. The result is that the larger banks, credit unions and finance companies are often overflowing with repossessed cars and seized cars that they need to sell through a seized car auction.

There are also times when a government agency has the power to seize cars and put them into seized car auctions. This might happen because a person owes an excessive amount of money in taxes, or because a vehicle was used in the commission of a crime or was purchased with illegal gains, such as with drug money.

When lending institutions, banks, police departments, and various federal agencies end up with a growing number of cars that have been seized or repossessed, they ultimately spend a lot of money to store these vehicles. In most cases, the people from whom the cars were seized have either no recourse at all for getting the vehicle back or a short window of opportunity to get the vehicle back before the agency has the right to sell it off. If there is no longer any chance of the person being able to reclaim the vehicle, then it can be sold through a seized car auction, which the agencies prefer to do as soon as possible to minimize their storage expenses.

In many cases, a seized car auction can be a bargain hunters dream, enabling them to save hundreds, or even thousands of dollars, on a wide variety of cars, truck, vans, recreational vehicles, and even boats and other recreational sports vehicles. These seized, motor car auctions provide people with terrific opportunities to get a better quality vehicle than they might otherwise have been able to afford. For those who are really lucky, they could be driving away with their dream car after only paying one quarter to one half of the amount that they might have paid, had they gone to a regular dealership.

Before attending repossessed car auctions you need to be sure to do some homework first. If you have a particular model in mind, then do some research to find out what the fair market value is. It is a good idea not to start bidding at the first used car auction you attend, but instead, watch the proceedings so that you can get a feel for the general buying environment and gain an understanding of how the entire car auto auction process works.

Buying a Repossessed Car Online

Usually, when people buy cars, regardless of whether it is new or used, it is one of the largest purchases that they will make, with the exception of a home. Everyone wants to save money and feel like they got a super deal when purchasing one, and thanks to the advent of the online auto auction, people now have access to a great selection of all kinds of repossessed cars, seized cars, and other types of vehicles that are available through the online car auction websites.

One of the best things about the online auto auctions is that, while searching the internet for just the right vehicle to meet the needs of you and your family, you can also take advantage of that same technology to do the research that will help you to know whether or not you really are getting a great deal on the car. Having that kind of research in hand, which includes digging up the Kelly Blue Book price to give you a good idea of the fair market value of the vehicle, will help you know when to stop bidding so that you don't get carried away and end up paying too much because you got sucked into a bidding war.

One primary reason for the popularity of online car auction websites is because people can go through the car buying process without having to negotiate with a used car salesman, which so many people simply hate. Even though used car salesmen are often the butt of jokes, there is a good deal of truth to those wisecracks. If people have a chance to avoid the sales tactics used by car dealerships, then it makes for a much more pleasant experience.

As you prepare to make your first vehicle purchase through an online used car auction, you should register with at least a few of the different online car auction websites and spend some time getting familiar with every aspect of the website and the online auto auction proceedings and policies. Watch a few auctions on all of the sites that you are registered with to see how things progress and to get a feel for the "culture" of the different online auto auction sites. You will more than likely start to feel that one of the sites feels like the best place for you to try your hand at getting the winning bid on a car.

The websites that run the online auto auctions usually have a filtering function that will allow you to search for certain types of vehicles and to search in a certain area near your home. You might find that you have plenty of choices within just a five mile radius of your home, or you may have to extend the search criteria for areas that are farther away from your location. You will want to restrict the search area to a distance that you are comfortable driving to so that you can do an inspection and take the vehicle for a test drive.

There are also vehicle history reports that are available online that can give you additional information on the vehicle you are interested in bidding on. Some online car auction sites provide those reports for an additional fee or have links to help you find such services. Do as much homework on the vehicle as you can upfront and keep in mind that with any type of used car auction, all sales are final.

I never thought to look to buy repo cars. This lens certainly has opened my eyes a bit to the prospect of doing just that. A lot cheaper than buying new and will probably last as long!
    Thanks for the tips!

Great lens I was pretty convinced that all of these penny auction websites were a scam, but after reading this page it actually makes sense as to how they're able to sell items at such low prices while still being a profitable business model. Thanks and keep up the good work.
