Guatemala Chicken Buses
The public transportation in Guatemala is either by chicken bus or tut tut. Tut tuts are primarily in Antigua and dont venture far out of town. The chicken buses are all over the country. Chicken buses are either used in town or they go from town to town and many stops in between. To ride a chicken bus is deffinently a low cost way to travel the country.
You need to be careful when selecting a bus to ride on, some of the buses look to have seen better days while others are a piece of art. In Guatemala there is no smog control or pollution control devices on the vehicles, with the windows open or busted out of the bus your lungs may get filled with black soot from the tail pipe of the bus or surrounding vehicles. Also if you are claustrophobic you may want to find another mode of transportation. Buses are designed to have two passengers per seat but with no rules in Guatemala any thing go's. I have been on chicken buses where there are 3 and 4 people per seat along with people standing in the aisle and hanging out the door and on the bumper, a tad bit overloaded but me made it to our destination alive.

Chicken Bus in Guatemala
This is a funny video of us following a Chicken Bus between Chichicastenango and Los Encuentros. You can see the luggage guy trying to climb down the ladder and into the back door. Seeing that there's no room, he gives up and goes back up top. Only in Guatemala!

I grimace, as the bus lists dangerously to the right, throws me off balance momentarily and delivers me rather unapologetically into the lap of a heavily-wrinkled old woman - eyes closed and lips muttering, a rosary clasped between her fingertips. ....

The world infamous chicken bus reinvents itself again. The chicken bus that was born out of a retired school bus from our neighbors from up north; a second life or recycling ( whatever you want to call it); transformed itself into mass public transit bus for the rural areas of Guatemala.
Well, the chicken bus now sports a brand new dvd player to entertain the passengers while they are squeezed into space originally designed for two children that now fits three large adults. At least, we can watch music videos between paradas (bus stops) as long as we are not riding parados (standing up).

- Guatemala is nothing if not colorful! Here even the ever so mundane American school bus comes dressed like a Las Vegas show girl. Picture a mechanical pig decked out for carnival. They are simply fantastic ...as long as you don't care where Waiting to leaveyou are going and it doesn't matter when you get there.
