COFFEE MUGS
Ranked #2,805 in Food & Cooking, #54,838 overall
Coffee cups, mugs, tumblers are fun to collect! Just like collecting pottery or other figurines. They have so many different types and designs. As well as some very, very unique, or antiique mugs as well. From china to travel mugs, there is a design for everyone.
MUGS
Whereas ancient mugs were usually carved in wood or bone or shaped of clay, most modern ones are made of ceramic materials such as earthenware, bone china, porcelain or stoneware. Some are made from strengthened glass, such as Pyrex. Other materials, including plastic, steel and enameled metal are preferred where break resistance is at a premium, such as for campers. Techniques such as silk screen printing or decals are used to apply decorations; these are fired onto the mug to ensure permanence.

At Honey Bean Coffee whether you like Gourmet Flavored Coffees, regular Gourmet Coffee, Gourmet Tea or Gourmet Flavored Teas we will always strive to bring you the best that we can find. If we find a source for gourmet coffee or gourmet tea that is better than what we currently have, we will switch our coffee or tea source. When it comes to gourmet flavored coffee and gourmet flavored tea we are constantly on the lookout for new flavor combinations that both make sense and taste amazing. If you know of a flavor combination that we don't have let us know, we will do our best to add it to our line up or gourmet coffees and gourmet teas.
Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi) mugs
Ancestral Pueblo (Anasazi) mugs from SW Colorado, made between 1000 and 1280 CE. The meaning of the carving in the handles is yet unknown, but it is probably not functional. The Story of the English Puzzle Mug

In the simple pre-electronic days of old, drinkers carousing in taverns might have enjoyed their brew from pottery mugs especially designed for boisterous amusement. A ceramic frog peering from the bottom of the cup, or a chirping whistle mug, such were the creations of long-gone potters to enhance the hilarity of happy hour.
Unless held to the mouth in exactly the right way, a Puzzle Mug would spill beer down the drinkers shirt. This was a big hit with the tavern crowd. The mugs were designed with multiple dribble holes and tunnels inside the handle and cup rim, the handle or walls connected to a drinking spout at the lip of the cup. This would allow the drinker to suck up his beverage, providing his fingers covered the right combination of false drinking spouts also placed around the cup lip. If he attempted drinking from the cup in the customary fashion, the beverage would pour out through perforations carved just under the lip. As the evening progressed into a rowdy uproar, finding the safe spot from which to drink would become increasingly chancy, providing merriment for all.
Staggering home in clothing soaked in beer has lost some appeal down the centuries. This might explain why puzzle mugs have gone out of vogue. They linger in a crude modern counterpart, the dribble glass, found in novelty shops. This, merely a glass drilled with a dribbling hole, is a far cry from the elaborate pottery concoctions designed to send tavern patrons into stitches. (Delia Robinson-Ceramics Today 2009?)

The invention of a pottery glaze for decorative use with the addition of tin oxide to the slip of a lead glaze occurred in Persia before the 9th century. Tin glaze turns into opaque white enamel when fired. Majolica and faience are synonymous terms, which refer to hand-painted earthenware pottery on which a tin glaze has been used. The term majolica has its origin in the name of the Spanish island, Majorca (Maiorca), which was a transshipping point for tin-glazed wares being transported from the kingdom of Aragon in Spain to Italy in the 14th and 15th centuries. This type of pottery drew inspiration from the Moorish influence in Spain. Ships arriving from Majorca landed at the port of Pisa, so it is easy to trace on a map how the production of majolica spread through Tuscany to the Umbria region with its rich deposits of clay in the hills around Orvieto, Gubbio and Deruta, and to Faenza in the Emilia Romagna area. The term faience is the French word for the city of Faenza, one of the major producers of majolica for export as early as the 15th century. Eventually the production of majolica, or faience, spread to France, Germany, Holland, Portugal, and England as well. Plateel is the Dutch word which means Majolica.
Italian majolica, or faience, reached its zenith in the 15th and 16th centuries, although it is still in production today. Several styles of decoration developed over the centuries and different cities had their own unique interpretations. Quick brush strokes and the Moorish influence of interwoven leaves, flowers, arabesques, birds and other animals are hallmarks of Italian majolica. Depictions of beautiful courtly ladies and gentlemen were popular, as well as the styles known as Ricco, Rafaellesco, Arabesco, and Gallo.
