For me this has been an important concern for many years. The missing piece continues to be support at the highest levels.

Absolutely spot on -- great information! Ethics and how big business affects the rest of the word can no longer be ignored -- thanks for the reminder. I hope this lens reaches the eyes of some of the CEOs who clearly need it.

Excellent lens and some very interesting thoughts on a corporation being ethical and socially responsible.I have many thoughts on this but not here.Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for this thought-provoking lens full of so many resources. Everyone (not just corporations) needs to be as ethical and socially responsible as possible. But when corporations are so desperately trying to please their shareholders, profits are probably going to still rule the day. ~~Blessed~~

Until the shareholders are held accountable for the decisions of the board members, change will not likely come. If corporations were scored and taxed according to their environmental footprint, we could clean things up in a hurry. But then you have to get the 'politics' out of the scoring and keep it honest and accurate. Goof luck there. Houston Website Optimization

I frankly don't believe any business can be ethical or non ethical. It can be only more or less ethical, but always with some compromises. If we have business, we have profit and we have profit somebody will get more and somebody else will get less. So - not black and white, only different shades of gray.
    Thanks for awesome lens!

Lots of work went into this lens. Some businesses still do not realize that operating ethically and in an eco-friendly way will keep customers coming back. Furthermore, it is really not that hard (nor more expensive) to do. It's about changing habits and educating employees. Great lens!
  • johnA11 Feb 1, 2012 @ 8:26 am | delete
It's time that all business operate ethically and take responsibility for the impact they have on the environment. It's businesses that are profiting from the earth's resources and the communities they operate in, so it only seems fair that some of those profits should go towards CSR projects.
Great collection of resources on CSR and great lens.

unfortunately, corporations have too much leverage over our governments. Corporations sole responsibility is to maximise profits. It's up to government to set the rules in which they can do that, in order to protect the environment and human rights. However when our system is set up so that legislation gets written by big business, all those constraints get stripped away. The rich get rich, the rest of us, and the planet, get screwed

This is very important topic and are important discussion in the top business schools in the nation. Personal ethics is not separate from corporate ethnics and commuty wealth building. I Hope we can continue this discuss with your leadership role as a Lens Master who has created a most valuable lens on this topic. Thank you for this start on a very difficult subject as I have experienced first hand the results of corporate ethics a number of times in this difficult times when unemployment rate in USA is very high and likely to remain high in the near term. There is good reason behind "Wall Street Take Over" protest as it was back in 1963, when people marched in Washington , under the leadership of Martin Luthern King Jr. for "jobs and freedom". Great start on a very difficult subject that causes anger throughout the naion at this very moment !

"CSR or ethical business means taking account of the organisation's impact socially, environmentally, economically and in terms of human rights " Should be a "Bible" for all corporates and organisations. Thank you so much for sharing. Andrea

This is great! I was looking on Google for job descriptions of Ethics Advisors and subsequently clicking on some of the top results... As I was viewing the various tabs I had opened, I noticed the Squidoo Favicon (and I thought, I have my dashboard open in another window, why is there a Squidoo tab open in this window)... clicking on the tab and seeing what it was about, I was happy to have understood why it was open in this window. :-)

    With Love and Gratitude,

    Jeremiah

Phil Knight, Nike Co-founder did use have a interesting response to the Nike sweat shop allegations in the early 1990's. His (i.e. Nike's) call for industry reform, which is set forth in six new initiatives was neat approach to promoting social responsibility.

Yes, Josselin, I do think that CSR has in many cases been a response to a poor image, and those with a negative image have had to work particularly hard (to avoid losing customers and potential employees), which is why e.g. McDonalds is now so hot on it. There is a bit of a bandwagon effect too, but does that really matter if it places CSR higher on the agenda and companies become more socially aware and ethical?
  • Josselin Aug 11, 2010 @ 4:24 am | delete
Don't you think some of the cited companies are trying to buy themselves a good image ? (or conscience ? )

"Employees determine 90 percent of most businesses' profitability"

I wonder about the recently released study that states "These companies have been profitable for their owners and shareholders not only while being profitable for their employees, but because they have been profitable for their employees? Jody Heymann, the study's author, said in a release. ?These firms have been able to do this for a simple reason. How work is structured, how it is rewarded, and how workplaces encourage employee engagement are all central to the profitability of firms and to the quality of the daily lives of working men and women. Employees determine 90 percent of most businesses' profitability.?Makes me wonder If this Harvard study will ever get any traction. On another note any one out there know anything about this http://www.best-americanbusiness.com/ The review I read said that they plan to make
it the wiki of American businesses. Wondered If anyone out there knows any thing more about them.

CSR has become very popular these days and every company is trying to work on it. The business is also done ethically when companies try to follow social responsibilties. Each company should come forward and work on CSR and enjoy Ethical Business.
