Ted Lilly was one hit away from a no-hitter himself today.
Ted Lilly was one hit away from a no-hitter himself today. The left-hander nearly made it back-to-back no-hitters for the Cubs, flirting with a no-no vs. the Astros in 6-1 victory on Monday afternoon at Miller Park. Lilly gave up a single and a walk over seven innings, striking out nine. The one hit came with no outs in the seventh on a Mark Loretta single to shallow right field.
The Cubs won both games of the displaced series, relocated from Houston to Milwaukee due to Hurricane Ike, and now have 90 victories on the season. Their magic number for clinching the National League Central is down to six.
The Big Z - Zambrano
The Big "Z" comes through with a huge no hitter at Miller park in Milwaukee. The game was against the Houston Astro's since it was moved from Houston to Milwaukee because of hurricane IKE. Zambrano has not started a game in the last 12 starts since he is favoriting his right shoulder due to tendinitis. It was also the first no-hitter in Major League history to be accomplished on a field that was home to neither team.
Zambrano stated "I'm a little confused right now. I still can't believe it. It's a great feeling, and it's a feeling that you can't describe. To throw a no-hitter is good, man. This is one of the few things in baseball that you most enjoy."
Wrigley Field History
Wrigley Field has been the home to the Chicago Cubs since 1916. The stadium was actually built in 1914 and was home for a Federal League called the Chicago Whales. The stadium is built in a residential area called today as Wrigleyville, it sits on the corner of Sheffield ave and Addison St.
The mailing address is 1060 W. Addison St.
Todays capacity of The Friendly Confines is 41,118 which makes the stadium the fourth smallest ballpark but it is the most active park.
The Cubs played their first game at Weeghman Park on April 20, 1916, besting the Cincinnati Reds 7-6 in eleven innings. Then in 1918 the Cubs won the National League Pennent. For the Cubs, the experience was a bust, as the club lost the series to Babe Ruth and the Boston Red Sox in six games.
During this time the Confines was owned by the flamboyant Charles A. Weeghman, known as "Lucky Charlie".
">
In November 1918, Weeghman gave up his remaining interest to William Wrigley, resigned as president, and left baseball for good. Wrigley would acquire complete control of the Cubs by 1921.

In 1922 William Wrigley decided it was time to enlarge the stadium, the work began in December of 1922 and finished in time for the season opener in 1923. The expansion grew the seating capacity from 18,000 to 31,000.
By 1926 the stadium had over 900,000 fans come through it turnstiles. At the close of the season work began to add a second deck to the grandstand. By the opening of the 1927 season only 1/2 of the progect was completed and then in 1928 the uppe deck was completed.
The Wrigley Field bleachers and scoreboard were constructed in 1937 when the outfield area was renovated to provide improved and expanded seating ... the original scoreboard remains still intact today. Also in 1937 is when the Boston Ivy

was planted against the outfield wall.
In 1941 lights were donated to light up Wrigley Field, but for many reason it was never done. But then in 1988 the lights were turned on. The first major league night game at Wrigley was attempted on August 8 1988 against the Philadelphia Phillies, but was rained out after 3 1/2 innings.

- Cubs fans flock to 'Wrigley North' | cubs.com: News
- Miller Park, already known as "Wrigley North" because it's a 90-minute drive from Chicago's Wrigley Field, was predictably painted Cubs blue and white. The two lower decks were packed, but most upper deck sections were roped off because the stadium didn't have enough staffers on hand.
Most Milwaukee fans stayed home and watched their team complete a doubleheader in Philadelphia. Most, not all.

Santo, a fan-favorite Cubs third baseman from 1960-73, was one of 10 finalists named for the National Baseball Hall of Fame's Veterans Committee ballot on Tuesday.
The others are Dick Allen, Gil Hodges, Jim Kaat, Tony Oliva, Al Oliver, Vada Pinson, Luis Tiant, Joe Torre and Maury Wills, among players whose careers began in 1943 or later. The results of the voting, and whether any of the 10 will be enshrined in the 2009 class, will be announced at baseball's Winter Meetings on Dec. 8.
