Calcutta Rocks - Have Fun While in Calcutta

Calcutta rocks! It has something for everyone - you can live a relaxed and soothing life soaking in the pleasures of theatres and temples/churches. Or you can have loads of fun at the various malls and hangouts - then round it off with a dinner in a nice restaurant.

Calcutta is probably the worst place to live in if you detest the political nonsense - the parties here may call a strike (won't work, won't let anyone go to work either) at the drop of a hat.

But having seen the worst, it has turned back and the government has realised that we need to work and offer a quality infrastructure for companies and industries if the place has to grow. So there is new construction all over - more work, more pay. There are some excellent hosing projects coming up and also, some very convenient office complexes. Stay tuned, we will be reviewing some of them right here.

Come let's discover Calcutta together! We have reviewed several Calcutta restaurants, hangouts, tourist spots and shopping centres at CalcuttaRocks  :)

What you say means a lot to us!

I really appreciate your comments on our lens (this web page) and our blog www.CalcuttaRocks.com. Please feel free to post a comment in the guestbook here - I personally read every comment.

Calcutta Real Estates - What do you say?

We are planning to setup a web site that will discuss the issues that property buyers in Calcutta (Kolkata) are concerned with. This will be entirely different from the brochureware of the other sites and will cover the real issues.

Please post your questions here - what do you want to know about the property matters in Calcutta? Which areas do you think are hot? Which developers are giving you what they promised? Who are taking you for a ride? This is your chance to be heard. Share it with us.

I have booked a flat in Rajarhat and will be getting the delivery in 2008. Is Rajarhat a part of Newtown and or is considered a different locality? Will my flast appreciate when Newtown gets more popular?

Is it a good idea to invest in new properties coming up in New Town for pure investment purpose (for resale later)?

Calcutta is here : Come and enjoy our warm hospitality

Heavy Rains Drown Large Parts of Calcutta

Spetembe 27, 2007: Very heavy rain, lasting for 3 days has drowned several parts of Calcutta. Areas like Bangur Avenue are under waist deep water even after 2 days of the rain having stopped.

Even the newly coming up townships of New Town and Rajarhat were innundated as the Bagjola canal which is mainly used to drain away the water was overflowing. Same thing happened with Salt Lake.

Similary Ultadanga is also having thigh level waterlogging and even my car got stuck in the water but thanks to the new age technology in the cars, they don't stall so easily as they used to earlier.

I hope the municipal corporation takes some strong steps and makes a nice chunk of investment to avoid such happenings in the future.

Calcutta Celebrates Durga Puja

Durga Puja gets the local people, Bengali or otherwise, crazy. Can you escape it?

Durga Puja is the biggest festival for the local folks, the Bengalis and it has become so grand, so infectious that all other communities (yes, Calcutta has a fairly large number of Marwaris, Gujratis, Biharis, UPwallahs, Southies and more) are equally excited about having fun.

I have even seen Muslim families who would not pray to Hindu Gods (quite logically, they pray to the Lord Supreme in another form) go around the puja pandals and enjoy the festivities and the holiday mood all around.

The people who hail from Bengal or have lived for long here, but presently in another country like USA, UK or just about anywhere else, also get nostalgic and remember the good old days of night-long pandal hopping.

Do you remember Calcutta and it's Durga Puja celebrations? Why not post a comment in the guestbook here? We will love to share our fun with you.

Afraa - the newest restaurant in City Centre, Calcutta

Want to try out the latest restaurant in town? See this...

Afraa, the restaurant with the all white decor has just begun serving clients at the City Centre, Calcutta.

It boasts of a beautiful dining area and a cool lounge bar. You must definitely check out my review of Afraa here.

Calcutta Students Create History in School Polls

Lakshmipat Singhania Academy, a Calcutta school, created history of sorts by holding its student council polls electronically with a computerised voting system developed by two class XII students, Shubhangam Agrawal and Archit Tantia.

The school thus avoided wasting a large amount of paper and saved on delay and confusion. The results could be declared within about half an hour of the voting completion.

We are told that this is the first time an Indian school has used electronic voting in holding its school polls and is a fair indication of what the youth can do with good inspiration.
