Cal Ripken, Jr. -- Hall of Fame Shortstop for the Baltimore Orioles
Cal Ripken, Jr. is the 2007 Hall of Fame Shortstop for the Baltimore Orioles. Arguably the most popular baseball player of his generation, Cal Ripken won the American League Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award twice (1983 and 1991), and was also named the American League Rookie of the Year in 1982.
Today, Cal Ripken, Jr. enjoys life as the owner of the minor league baseball team the Aberdeen IronBirds. The Ironbirds name is a tribute to both Cal Ripken's legacy as baseball's "Iron Man", playing in a record 2,632 games, and the fact he played his entire career for the Baltimore Orioles ("The Birds"). Aberdeen, Maryland also holds a special place in Cal's heart as it is a town he grew up near.
Cal Ripken, Jr. was also chosen in 2007 by President Bush to be the U.S. Special Sports Envoy (via the US State Department), and travelled to China in October 2007 to help spread the game of baseball overseas.

During his baseball career, he earned the nickname The Iron Man for doggedly remaining in the lineup despite numerous minor injuries and for his reliability to "show up" to work everyday. He is perhaps best known for breaking New York Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig's record for consecutive games played, a record many deemed unbreakable. Ripken surpassed the 56-year-old record when...
