Small Town with Growth Potential

Campbell River is my home. I am a relative newcomer but I think this also provides a new perspective on the town.

For years Campbell River was a resource-based town. It used to be called The Salmon Capital of the World. Sadly, the fish have dwindled and the mills and mines are either slowing down or shutting down. We're in the midst of recreating ourselves and there's a lot of change going on.

UPDATE! The Courier Islander Newspaper reports record returns for our salmon on both the Quinsam and Campbell Rivers. As of Monday, August 10th, 2009 hatchery workers counted approximately 58,000 pinks in the Campbell River and another 65,000 pinks through the counting fence on the Quinsam River.

The one thing remains the same: the incredible physical beauty of the place. From my home in Willow Point, just south of the main area, I can drive along the Island Highway, right beside the ocean and enjoy an exquisite view of Quadra Island. I can watch boats of many varieties as they travel up Discovery Passage.

And I can do this EVERY DAY!!! Even if it's foggy and rainy, it's a beautiful place to be.

I hope you'll find what you need here, whether you're planning on visiting Campbell River, making the big decision to relocate here or wanting to explore the town you already live in.

5 Things You Should Not Miss In Campbell River

Canyon View Trail
An hour long hike around the majestic Campbell River. Watch for bears :-)

Ideal Cafe
Best place for a (hangover) brunch. Retro interior with classic good food.

Painters Lodge and April Point
Free water taxi. Load up at Painters and even if you don't stay at April Point on Quadra Island for a meal (but you should, it's good) or spa treatment (even better) the boat ride is worth it. Take a walk around, check out the gift shop, and come back on the next taxi.

Beaver Lodge Lands
Right in the heart of town. Many trails perfect for biking, families, running. One of my fave places to be. Oh yeah, watch for bears here too!

Dick's Fish and Chips
On the water by the Quadra Island Ferry. Dee-LISH. They serve your meal in a newspaper cone. On a sunny day you can sit outside and use their custom built newspaper cone holders to keep your meal upright. No better place in town for fish and chips. HIGHLY recommended.

Hometown to Actor Barry Pepper

Barry Pepper was born April 4, 1970, in Campbell River but left when he was 5 years old to sail the world with his family. That adventurous spirit has not left him as you'll see him in many action/adventure films such as Flags of Our Fathers (2006), The Green Mile (1996), Enemy of the State (1998) and most notably, Saving Private Ryan (1998).

Wikipedia say...

Here's what Wikipedia has to say about Campbell River. If you have further comments to add, let them know. Hey, I think there's stuff there I haven't even learned about yet! I think it's important to know the background of a place you're visiting and/or residing. It's just good manners.

:This article is about the city on Vancouver Island. For its namesake river see Campbell River (Vancouver Island). For other uses see Campbell River.

Campbell River is a coastal city in British Columbia on the east coast of Vancouver Island at the south end of Discovery Passage, which lies along the important coastal Inside Passage shipping route. Campbell River claims a population (2006 census) of 32,000 and has long been touted as "the Salmon Capital of the World".

The town is served by an airport (YBL), a seaplane base called YHH at Campbell River Harbour, a BC Ferries route to Quadra Island, and highways which connect it to neighbouring towns such as Courtenay, The Village of Sayward, Gold River, Port McNeill and Port Hardy.

The 1948 construction of the BC Power Corporations Elk Falls hydroelectric dam and the John Hart Generating Station — allowed Crown Zellerbach to establish the Elk Falls Pulp and Paper Mill in 1952, which greatly improved the town's economy. The mill is currently owned by Catalyst Paper and is currently shut down indefinitely.

NVI Mining operates the Myra Falls zinc, gold and silver mine in nearby Strathcona Provincial Park.

Quinsam Coal operates an underground coal mine southwest of town. The mines employ hundreds of people, many of whom live in Campbell River.

The city is also a growing market for retirees.
