Cancer Gift Ideas
Are you looking for some cancer gift ideas for a friend or family member with breast cancer, ovarian cancer or any other type of cancer? This page will give some gift ideas and suggestions that you can make or buy to show that special friend or child that you care for them and are supporting them when they have been diagnosed with cancer. When Kaylee, my 13 year old daughter, was diagnosed with cancer (Hodgkin's Lymphoma) in 2008, it came as a great shock. Through the ordeal of chemotherapy and losing her hair, Kaylee felt blessed and special by the thoughtful gifts that people sent to wish her well and to let her know they were thinking and praying for her.
I have included some cancer gifts that you can make if you are a little creative, such as a knitted teddy or a crocheted blanket. There are also some ideas for cancer gifts which will encourage and support, or cancer gifts which will be of practical use to the cancer patient.

Knitted scarf
When a cancer patient loses their hair due to treatment, a hand-knitted scarf to keep their neck warm may be gratefully received.Requirements:
- 3 x 50g balls of a fluffy novelty yarn to match the beanie (such as eyelash)
- 2 Knitting needles US8 (UK6, 5mm)
Instructions:
- Cast on 21 st (or more for a wider scarf)
- Knit until long enough (3 50g balls makes about 4½ feet (144cm) length, depending on the yarn used)
- If fringe is wanted for this width you need 7 x 16" (40cm) of yarn. Double it and crochet each piece on, beginning with one on either side, then one in the the centre and then 2 lots each between the side and centre.(7). Cut the loops. Each one makes 4 strands.
Matching knitted beanie pattern
Cancer patients who suddenly lose their hair can really feel the cold. A snug knitted beanie can help to keep keep the cold at bay both during the day and even in bed at night. Many volunteers knit beanies and scarves for children and there was often a box of these treasures in varying sizes to sift through at the children's hospital where Kaylee went. Kaylee was also given several of these beanies and matching scarves hand-made by my Mum. Thanks Mum for these instructions!Requirements:
- 3 x 50g balls of a fluffy novelty yarn (such as eyelash)
- 2 Knitting needles US8 (UK6, 5mm)
- tapestry needle
- large safety pins
Instructions:
- Cast on 65 st. (or 72 st. for a large head) Leave the spare yarn hanging (about 6" (15cm) or so for sewing up with later, but being careful not to start knitting with it).
- Knit about 70 rows, using up 2 balls.
Decrease for shaping beginning with 3rd ball yarn.
- K1 (K 2 tog. K6) to end of row. (total 57 st).
- K1 (K 2 tog. K5) to end. (total 49 st).
- K4 (K 2 tog. K4) to end. (total 41 st).
- K3 (K 2 tog. K3) to end. (total 33 st).
- K2 (K 2 tog. K2) to end. (total 25 st).
- K1 (K 2 tog. K1) to end. (total 17 st).
- Knit 2 st together to end (total 9 st).
Sewing the hat
- Cut the yarn leaving 12" (30cm) of yarn on the knitting and thread this onto a very large holed tapestry needle. Thread the yarn through the 9 st., 2 times beginning at the first st. and pulling it tight and off the needle.
- Pin the 2 sides together with large safety pins, and sew them together evenly.
- Sew up from the bottom as well with the left-over piece of yarn, finishing off both ends under the turn-over rim for neatness. This seam will be the centre back of the beanie, although it shouldn't show.

Nintendo DS Lite Cobalt / Black
Amazon Price: $129.99 (as of 12/20/2009)![]()
Kaylee was blessed to be able to receive her treatment at the children's hospital. During our stay, we saw many teenage boys and preteen boys playing on portable game consoles - making them a great gift idea for a boy or young man - or even a girl. This Nintendo DS Lite has received more than 900 5* ratings on Amazon. Obviously a popular choice. It even comes in pretty pink for the girls.
This cancer gift idea will suit almost everyone
Coby TFDVD7008 7-Inch Portable DVD/CD/MP3 Player, Black
Amazon Price: $68.99 (as of 12/20/2009)![]()
One of my readers suggested a portable DVD player for a cancer gift. The patient can watch his own movies while receiving chemotherapy (which can take many hours), while waiting in doctors' waiting rooms (more hours!) or during overnight stays in hospital.

- I was worried that this lens might commercialise misery but it doesn't. It's sensitively done. Well done. Blessed.

- Thank you for this very touching lens and for sharing your story. A mutual connection: my dad died with cancer about 6 years ago. Brought tears to my eyes reading this and joy too. Glad to know your daughter is doing well and may she take care of herself. I love crafts! yay!!! I'm feeling to write about crafts and my dad...
