Cancer Gift Ideas

Are you looking for some cancer gift ideas for a friend or family member with breast cancer, ovarian cancer or any other type of cancer? This page will give some gift ideas and suggestions that you can make or buy to show that special friend or child that you care for them and are supporting them when they have been diagnosed with cancer. When Kaylee, my 13 year old daughter, was diagnosed with cancer (Hodgkin's Lymphoma) in 2008, it came as a great shock. Through the ordeal of chemotherapy and losing her hair, Kaylee felt blessed and special by the thoughtful gifts that people sent to wish her well and to let her know they were thinking and praying for her.

I have included some cancer gifts that you can make if you are a little creative, such as a knitted teddy or a crocheted blanket. There are also some ideas for cancer gifts which will encourage and support, or cancer gifts which will be of practical use to the cancer patient.

Gifts of Time

Ways to give time to your friend

One of the most precious gifts you can give to a cancer patient is your gift of time. They may need someone to talk to or someone to just be there with them. When Kaylee was going through chemotherapy, I had a mattress set up on the floor of her bedroom so I would be there through the night should she need me (and to wake her up and give her some medications in the middle of the night).

Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • listening!

  • baby sitting

  • cooking a meal

  • driving the patient to hospital

  • weeding their garden

  • watching a funny movie together

Fluffy knitted teddy

Kaylee was given one of the special knitted trauma teddies at the hospital, knitted by volunteers for all the children who had operations. Here are the instructions for making a fluffy teddy.

Requirements
  • 4 or 5 x 50g balls of a fluffy novelty yarn (such as eyelash)

  • Knitting needles US6 (UK8, 4mm)

  • Black yarn or buttons (not for young children) for eyes and nose

  • Ribbon to tie around neck

Start at the legs
  • Cast on 16 stitches

  • Knit 38 rows - this completes one leg

  • Leaving this leg on the needle, cast on 16 stitches on the same needle (for the other leg)

  • Knit 38 rows - now you will have two legs on one needle

body
  • Knit 28 rows knitting across both legs (32 stitches)

arms
  • Cast on 24 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows

  • Knit 22 rows (80 stitches)

  • At the beginning of next 2 rows cast off 24 stitches

Head
  • Knit 62 rows (32 stitches) - this does the front and back of the head

arms - back
  • Cast on 24 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows

..... continue the remainder of the teddy in reverse order

Finishing the teddy
  • With good sides facing, sew up seams leaving a gap in the crotch for filling

  • Turn teddy good-side out.

  • Sew diagonal top corners for ears.

  • Sew on a happy face.

  • Stuff head loosely with filling.

  • Gather around the base of head by sewing gathering stitch and pulling tighter to form neck.

  • Stuff the rest of the teddy loosely with filling and stitch up the hole.

  • Tie a ribbon around the neck.

Make a crocheted blanket / afghan

Kaylee was given a lovely crocheted blanket. This is a gift which could be made by a group - a church group, a sports group, work colleagues, a mothers group etc. Each person could make a square then at the end, when all the squares are completed, they can be stitched together to form a cozy blanket.

This video is quite long, but you won't need to watch it all if you can get the hang of it after a few of the rounds.

Practical Cancer Gifts

Head Coverings

Hair loss due to chemotherapy can be very devastating especially for a female cancer patient. A comfortable, reliable, pretty head covering would make a lovely gift for a woman or a girl. Kaylee was given several hats and we bought a few more ourselves.

CJ Hats is a store selling just these sorts of head coverings for a very reasonable price.

Here are several of the hats available. There are many more styles and colors available.

American Stars Red EZ Chemo Cap

Knitted scarf

When a cancer patient loses their hair due to treatment, a hand-knitted scarf to keep their neck warm may be gratefully received.

Requirements:
  • 3 x 50g balls of a fluffy novelty yarn to match the beanie (such as eyelash)

  • 2 Knitting needles US8 (UK6, 5mm)

Instructions:
  • Cast on 21 st (or more for a wider scarf)

  • Knit until long enough (3 50g balls makes about 4½ feet (144cm) length, depending on the yarn used)

  • If fringe is wanted for this width you need 7 x 16" (40cm) of yarn. Double it and crochet each piece on, beginning with one on either side, then one in the the centre and then 2 lots each between the side and centre.(7). Cut the loops. Each one makes 4 strands.

Matching knitted beanie pattern

Cancer patients who suddenly lose their hair can really feel the cold. A snug knitted beanie can help to keep keep the cold at bay both during the day and even in bed at night. Many volunteers knit beanies and scarves for children and there was often a box of these treasures in varying sizes to sift through at the children's hospital where Kaylee went. Kaylee was also given several of these beanies and matching scarves hand-made by my Mum. Thanks Mum for these instructions!

Requirements:
  • 3 x 50g balls of a fluffy novelty yarn (such as eyelash)

  • 2 Knitting needles US8 (UK6, 5mm)

  • tapestry needle

  • large safety pins

Instructions:
  • Cast on 65 st. (or 72 st. for a large head) Leave the spare yarn hanging (about 6" (15cm) or so for sewing up with later, but being careful not to start knitting with it).

  • Knit about 70 rows, using up 2 balls.

Decrease for shaping beginning with 3rd ball yarn.
  • K1 (K 2 tog. K6) to end of row. (total 57 st).

  • K1 (K 2 tog. K5) to end. (total 49 st).

  • K4 (K 2 tog. K4) to end. (total 41 st).

  • K3 (K 2 tog. K3) to end. (total 33 st).

  • K2 (K 2 tog. K2) to end. (total 25 st).

  • K1 (K 2 tog. K1) to end. (total 17 st).

  • Knit 2 st together to end (total 9 st).

Sewing the hat
  • Cut the yarn leaving 12" (30cm) of yarn on the knitting and thread this onto a very large holed tapestry needle. Thread the yarn through the 9 st., 2 times beginning at the first st. and pulling it tight and off the needle.

  • Pin the 2 sides together with large safety pins, and sew them together evenly.

  • Sew up from the bottom as well with the left-over piece of yarn, finishing off both ends under the turn-over rim for neatness. This seam will be the centre back of the beanie, although it shouldn't show.

Kaylee was blessed to be able to receive her treatment at the children's hospital. During our stay, we saw many teenage boys and preteen boys playing on portable game consoles - making them a great gift idea for a boy or young man - or even a girl. This Nintendo DS Lite has received more than 900 5* ratings on Amazon. Obviously a popular choice. It even comes in pretty pink for the girls.
